Problem with Food? - July 4th 2017, 05:51 PM

I didn't really know where to put this thread, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section. Be warned that food and gagging is discussed in this thread.

Over the past year, I've had a problem with food. It's been making me feel nauseous and gag. I can never eat until I feel full anymore, and I normally stop eating when I'm a quarter to halfway full, so I'm normally hungry later. When I'm only a quarter or halfway full and try to eat more, I end up gagging and feel sick. Whenever I go out to eat, I'm always nervous that I'll gag and end up vomiting all over everyone. I don't have acid reflux, and I'm not sure why food makes me gag. I don't gag every time I eat, but it does happen frequently. I'd just like this problem to stop so I can eat normally again. Has anyone else ever had this problem and if so, what did you do to fix it?

I know that no one can tell me exactly what's wrong, which is fine. I just want an outside perspective on whether or whether not this is viewed as a serious problem.

Have you had any bad experiences with food that may contribute to this e.g. food poisoning, allergic reactions, chocking? Or do you feel depressed or anxious often? If we have had bad experiences with food, we may worry about similar things happening again, which can make us feel like not eating as usual. Equally, depression and anxiety can cause us to lose our appetite and get full quickly. It could even be related to other conditions like constipation, or even eating disorders. While we can't diagnose you, it can be helpful to think about if there are any causes.

What is interesting is that you worry about gagging and vomiting when eating out. I'm wondering whether this worry is allowing the problem to continue? Perhaps take a few deep breaths and try to relax before eating. While it may feel uncomfortable if you feel full, it is unlikely that you will vomit.

I've not had this issue (though I have had lack of appetite relating to anxiety/depression, and in which case, it went away over time as the anxiety/depression lifted...I just had to keep trying to eat normally). I guess try to eat as you usually would, but don't force yourself either. If you feel full, save the food for later when you get hungry.

Since it's been a while that this has started, it's probably worth seeking help for, perhaps from a doctor or counsellor. This is especially true if you are unintentionally losing weight because of this issue.

Thanks for your response! I haven't had any bad experiences with food like an allergic reaction or anything. Worrying is probably allowing the problem to continue. I'll try to take a few deep breaths from now on.
