I can't deal with my chronic pain any longer - help! - November 27th 2017, 07:20 PM

I'm in agony pretty much 24/7 with really bad joint pain in my whole body - particularly in my hands. It's now been 7 months. The doctors have tried everything and ive even been to consultants privately but all my tests have come back clear and they're saying there's nothing physically wrong with me.

It's been labelled as chronic pain and a month ago they told me that a I'll just have to learn to put up with it cause they don't think painkillers would be wise.

At my last doctors appointment I was told to watch YouTube videos on chronic pain - this was their only advice along with eat healthily, exercise and exercise. Really helpful... not. Pretty impossible to sleep well at the minute with this level of pain.

But it's really impacting my life and I don't know how much longer I can go on with this. I'm doing a levels and am struggling to write. I've had to drop out of orchestra and traditional group because the pain in my hands is too much to deal with and it takes me nearly a full week to recover if I over do it by the slightest which breaks my heart because love violin and piano and music is the only part of school I enjoy.

The pain leaves me so tired that I often come home from school and sleep which means I can't get homework done and also I often feel too tired to socialise or do things with my friends - I have to avoid things involving a lot of movement or even walking.

I just cant cope anymore. It's making me really miserable. What can I do?

I moved your thread to General Health because I feel it fits better here.

Maybe in the meantime you can find ways to cope with your pain? For instance, you could try experimenting with warmth or coolness to see if either one helps. If warmth helps, you can take warm baths or showers with different joint pain salts. You could use heating pads or different warming lotions to help soothe the pain away. If coolness works, you can take a cool shower, use menthol cream, or hold cold packs. You could also try compression clothing items, such as gloves for your hands.

I live with Fibromyalgia and though pain is definitely different for everyone something I think could help is pushing yourself, but knowing your limits. For instance, you could slowly start pushing yourself to use your hands (e.g. squeezing a stress ball) and then increase that over time. It is important to still try when you can because chronic pain doesn’t define you.

While you’re struggling with chronic pain know that the difficulty of living with it decreases over time. In time, you’ll learn what coping skills work for you and you’ll be able to live with it more instead of suffer from it.

You can do this.
