Breast reduction surgery at 16? - June 19th 2018, 12:42 PM

Hello all,

I am 16 years old. I want some advice regarding breast reduction surgery.
I have huge breasts and my body is small. I feel very uncomfortable to go in front of people because I feel like I get too much attention because of it.
It is also so difficult to dress up and go for a party. I really don’t feel confident to go in front of others.

So I am thinking this will be the best solution to my problem. But since I am just 16, is it advisable? Or will I have to wait longer? What is the recommended age for a breast reduction surgery? And are there any side effects to it in the long run?
I am looking forward to your replies.
Thanks.

Hey there,

Sorry to hear that your breast size is causing you to feel uncomfortable. The age for breast reduction surgery may depend on what country and state you are in- in some places the minimum legal age may be 18.

The most common side effects in the long run is scarring and possible lost/altered nipple sensation. It's also important to remember that it's not entirely a permanent reduction either. If you gain weight or decide to have children, your breasts will still change and possibly get larger despite the surgery. There is also the risk that if you decide to have the surgery done, you might not be able to breastfeed in future.

If you want to learn more about the procedure, recovery and side effects you might want to check out this article on the NHS (UK health service).

Since your breasts make you feel uncomfortable and you lack confidence, maybe you could try counselling and see if that helps a bit? Therapies like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) looks at our thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how we can change these things to feel better. Even if we can't change the actual circumstance, we can change how we think and feel about things!

I am not sure what country you are in. In Canada the Government will cover the cost of a breast reduction based on that it affects your health.

One of the common complaints people who undergo the surgery is because it can cause negative effects to your back and spinal cord because of the weight you need to hold.

I hope you are able to discuss this with your doctor. If your breast size is causing health concerns for you, I would talk to them about them. Ask if you would be a good candidate for the surgery and what your steps would be.

All the best.
