Thumbs down cigarettes - June 9th 2009, 05:27 PM

so, this thursday will be 5 months without a cigarette for me - cold turkey and everything. after many failed attempts, this one seems to be sticking. what really got me to quit is one of my best friends. just the way he looked at me that night and said, "please, just don't smoke anymore, you don't need this, you're better than this. just stop, please," i felt like i had to quit.

here is the thing though; some of my friends smoke and so does my step-dad. i care about them and i don't know how to really knock it into their heads. i guess i am just not as convincing as my friend or who knows what, but i just was wondering some advice i could give to people around me to ask them to stop smoking..?

I don't know what you could do to help your friends and step-dad quit because everyone is different, and of course it is a personal choice. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, the person just doesn't want to quit or feels like they can't quit. What you can do (and what worked with my friend's dad) is just whenever they pull out a cigarette or buy a pack, you can say, "I care about you and I want you around for a long time, but those things (cigarettes) might keep that from happening." For your step-dad, you could add on that if you get married or have kids in the future, you want him to see that and be there for that.

I think it's so great that you decided to quit. Keep up the good work!

Perhaps a lead-by-example kinda thing would work? Just keep your own habit at bay and show your friends and step-dad that it is possible to stop smoking cigarettes.
