Diet Pills.. whats the risk? - January 20th 2009, 08:58 AM

As the title explains, whats the risk of diet pills? Do they work? Are they a sham? and I mean the ones bought in health stores, not via the internet.

Thanks

It honestly depends on the ingredients.

You should definitely check with your doctor before taking anything. Make a list of the ones you're considering and take it to the doctor and he or she can tell you if they are safe or will be effective.

I'm sure they would work, however, the degree to which they will work and possible side-effects will vary. As with all drugs (I refer to drugs to include all medications, herbal remedies, illegal/legal drugs for simplicity), there's going to be a risk. Drugs are not ideal, they don't target only the necessary area of the body, they target other, unwanted areas leading to side-effects (and a range of severity of side-effects from mild to moderate to severe to lethal).

I'm not too familiar with the pharmacology of diet pills (the part I'm interested in for all drugs I read/study), however, I'm sure that your lifestyle and diet will need to be considered. For example, if you are currently dieting in some way and losing weight doing so, diet pills are going to increase this. If you're sitting on the couch, hand in potato chips flipping through channels all month long, the diet pills probably won't have as big of as effect.

Saying the risk for all is too general. Look at the specific ones you are considering, or else we'd have to consider every single diet pill, look at the average risks, then say them. I cant be bothered to do that, so go to a store, look at the risks, etc... . Also, before popping the pills, see how healthy you are (i.e. weight, any diseases, etc...).

Or, simply go to a doctor and ask what ones to take (if any).

do you have to go through doctors to get them?

If I could get,
Another chance
Another Walk
Another Dance
with him

I would play a song
that would never ever end
I would love, love, love,
To dance with my father again.

There are multiple types of diet pills. You have herbal/homeopathic version and real pills which are usually borderline legal or have to be prescribed by a physician. The risk totally depends on what pills you have and.. It's probably wise to ask an expert about this, he/she will be much more informed than we are.

ok i have some from the health store which has something to do with the thyroid gland, and increases metabolism...

I do a little excersize, i go to karate usually once a week, and am thinking of taking up dancing. I've also cut out some of the crap I eat too.

Honestly, most diet pills are just speed and are extremely dangerous.

If they're from a heath store, then they may not make that much of a difference.
They could even just be diet supplements.

Your best bet is to take them back to the health store or to your doctors and ask them. They can tell you for sure.

Also, research the ingredients.
Some can be risky.

Most advice they are taken as part of a calorie controlled diet, with regular exercise. As long as they are herbal, they may not do much, but they won't harm you.
Try it out, and see what happens, just research them, and perhaps talk to your doctor also.
