What should be included in male genital examination? - February 1st 2010, 02:42 AM

Hey people

Just a question.

When I go for my physical examinations and my doctor has me slip off my underwear, he feels my testicles but that's all. Shouldn't he be checking for hernias/retracting foreskin/etc? What, in general, should be included in this type of examination? I just want to make sure that everything is okay in that department and I don't feel that my doc does as thorough a job as he should.

Tell him. It's okay to be open with your doctor.

You always beat me to these simple answer threads!

Talk to your doctor they are very open minded.

I pan to talk with him but I'm just wondering: is this something to worry about? SHOULD he be doing more? Or am I freaking out over nothing?

So, since both of you suggest talking to him, how can I say it? What do I do? How do I phrase it?

although i am a girl (sorry hope you dont mind!) i suggest phrasing it like, i would appreciate it if you could do a full exam of my genitalia to make sure everything works and is okay, like checking the foreskin ect, phrase it like that or something. i've been in situations where i've had to tell my doctor to take a good hard look at a lump or a mole.
just be honest, mature, open and you'll be fine. hope this helps and i hope you dont mind me giving you some advice

Also you have to take into consideration your age. Hernia's and all those other things are much more likely at a higher age, so that's when the doctor looks for them more thoroughly. I'm 15 and when I go for a physical, my doctor doesn't even look at my privates!

But if you DO have any concerns about particular parts, I suggest you either talk to your doctor about it (be blunt about it, your doctor will understand and help you without judging) or research what you're looking for, for possible self-examinations.

Hope this helped, if you need anyone to talk to feel free whenever I'm online, I love to chat!

Hey guys! Thanks for the replies!

@XhopeIsrealX: Don't mind at all! I only put the male prefix because they would more likely know what should be included.

@Jalik: I don't actually have a specific question, but I do prefer that my doctor check everything out. Most likely, everything is completely normal, but this is one area of my body in which I want to be sure because of the seriousness of the conditions that can occur.

BTW, I did talk to one of my friends (same age) and he said that his doc does retract the foreskin. Even when I was YOUNGER as in 1-7 my previous doctor checked that. Would perhaps a note work in this situation?
