These are medical alerts :]
They basically tell medical personnel that you have an illness or allergy. Mine says that I have diabetes and my sisters' says that she is allergic to Penicillin.

My mom wore one when her diabetes was bad.

My mother has one, for diabetes. I'm apparently supposed to wear one for my drug allergies, but I don't have one.

The system in England is probably slightly different to the one over there.
Don't we also have a message in a bottle system?

Message in a bottle.
You get a bottle and put in in the fridge, the emergency services look in the fridge and it has your medical information in.

I don't have one, but my grandmother does because she is allergic to something. I can imagine that if I had one though it would be an ordeal to get me to wear it. I don't really wear a lot of jewelry and I think it would get in the way. I wouldn't want a necklace either because I do wear them most days and it would get in the way, so I'd have to get a bracelet and I basically never wear them.

No. A medical alert is a bracelet or necklace or watch that EMS providers looks for on the scene of every trauma call. Being an EMT, I can speak from experience and say we never look in someones wallet to see if they have a card with them. The only time we look is to see a drivers license so we have a name to give to the ER. We look at the neck, wrists and ankles for a medical alert. If we don't see one, and nobody tells us, we assume you are healthy.

It's becoming more common, yes. When I get my next one it will be an anklet. People don't like to broadcast that they have medical problems so on the ankle, it is hidden to the public but EMS providers know to look there.

I've never found the need for one, but it does seem very helpful in such emergency situations. :)

Agreed...I'm also an EMT. An EMT wont touch your wallet unless they really really need to. I personally don't have one, but I love people who do since it makes it much easier on us. Same with ICE in a cellphone.
