Heart Palpitations - April 21st 2010, 06:39 PM

Recently I've been having heart palpitations. First I get a sinking feeling in my chest before they come on and then my heart beats really fast and sometimes skips beats and other times it feels like it's not beating at the right rhythm. Also, one time when it's happened I nearly blacked out so I'm kinda scared about them now.

I've done a bit of research online and it says most palpitations aren't going to do any serious damage to the heart but some can.

I'm planning on going to the doctors soon if they continue but I was wondering if anyone had experienced heart palpitations before and what they did to stop them happening?

I have had them before.
I went to a doctor and got an echocardiogram and it turned out just fine.
You can go to the doctor just to make sure but don't worry.
Less stress, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep is definitely a key factor in stopping them.
Good luck hun!

I have an irregular heartbeat, in my case it's caused by being underweight. There's medication they can put you on that will regulate your heartbeat, but only if it's really required. Most likely your doctor will send you for an echo-cardiogram and an ECG, perhaps a few other tests just to make sure.

Could it possibly be anxiety-related? I know I tend to get heart palpitations when I'm particularly anxious. They're very frightening, that's for sure! Are you under a lot of stress at the moment?

^^ I was going to say that. My sister has heart palpitations because of anxiety.

Good that you're going to the doctor

Hey there Cara,

I think that it's wonderful that you're going to a doctor about your heart palpitations, that's a very good idea and hopefully they will be able to help you. As Marie has said, it is likely that they may want to perform an ECG or other tests just to make sure everythings okay. The only time I've suffered from heart palpitations was when I had severe anxiety and panic attacks, which I received medication for.

Take care.

Could be do to with stress. Also if you are over or underweight... that obviously affects ur heart condition.

Ye.... diet, stress, smoking... the regular things that affect blood pressure and body weight.
