Passing out - April 29th 2010, 09:36 PM

Much to my ultimate horror, I passed out in the middle of my class last night

We were taking our final lab practical exam (anatomy class) and all of the sudden I started feeling nauseous. Then I got really, really lightheaded..and the sound in my ears started fading out, and my eyes got really fuzzy. Then down I went. In front of 30ish people I've never been so embarrassed in my LIFE.

This has happened once before, over a year ago. But that time, I hadn't eaten anything. And one time before, I was working at my dad's store, and I started feeling the exact same way I did last night. But I sat down before I could actually pass out. And this time, I had ate just before class. I felt fine all day until then. I have no clue why this happened..and I'm kinda worried..since this is technically the 3rd time in a year it's happend. We have no health insurance, so can't afford a trip to the doctor.

Has this happened to anyone else? Passed out for no apparent reason?

Are you drinking enough water.....it could be due to dehydration.

You just need to make sure you are drinking enough.

If you cant get to the doctors, why dont you ask a teacher from one of your classes

You could be anemic? I've passed out on numerous occassions because of this. You really ought to see your doctor, they can run all sorts of tests and prescribe the best possible treatment. Don't hope this will go away by itself. Passing out regularly is serious.

Take care.

I'd say you passing out sounds like anemia, have you tryed taking iron supplements? or eating more greens, and red meat?

I did that once, don't worry, I feel your pain. My problem was thyroid problems, of course this could also happen if you are squeamish. Every time you passed out, was there anyone discussing or showing anything gross; since it is anatomy, that could be why.

Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate it. Well, there were a few dissected fermaldahyde-covered fetal pigs in the room for the exam, but I've been around that all semester, and its never bothered me before. And the other time(s) it wasn't triggered by anything gross..just kinda random-like.

Anemia has crossed my mind..my mom's been anemic but she's never passed out. I need to get this checked out cause I know its serious enough, but no medical insurance

Thanks again

Anemia would be my first choice, especially since your mother has had it too. A lot of women have low iron and it tends to be hereditary. My mother, sister, and I all have trouble absorbing iron, and I've passed out from it before (though usually only when I'm sick as well).

I would definitely go see a doctor about it, but if you can't do that, maybe just go see a chemist? They could probably advise you as well and it wouldn't cost anything.
