Chocolate and Anxiety? - May 16th 2010, 05:31 AM

Can chocolate trigger anxiety?

Now, I do have anxiety and I take medicine. It works pretty well, but as you guys know it only takes off the edge and helps you think straight.

But tonight I ate a huge Wonka bar and earlier I had a Reeses crunch bar or something. After the Wonka bar (like an hour or two afterward) I had anxiety. Like to where I felt sick to my stomach- and I wasn't thinking about anything to freak me out or anything. Which is usually what my anxiety normally consists of.

I looked on another forum and some people said that Chocolate does trigger anxiety and just a few others said that it doesn't.

So does anyone know for sure? Because if it does, I think I'm gonna have to drop the stuff. Lol

I have heard different things. Some people say that chocolate (especially dark chocolate) actually decreases anxiety and stress. Other people say that the caffeine that is in chocolate increases your sense of anxiety because it stimulates your nervous system. For me personally, I try not to have too much caffeine because thats when I notice a problem. I will limit my caffeine intake. Maybe limit the amount of chocolate you eat to see if eating a little bit will not cause you to feel more anxious. If you experiment with the amount of chocolate that you eat, you may find an amount that you can eat without feeling any negative affects.

Hey there,

Chocolate is a stimulant and does contain caffeine. The caffeine and sugar in the chocolate may be giving you some of the feelings that we experience during an anxiety attack, so it may trigger or make you so uncomfortable that you may feel as though your anxiety is acting up.

Different things trigger different people. If you do feel as though chocolate may be having a negative effect on your anxiety levels, then I would recommend that you try to avoid it, if you can.

Take care.
