cracking back, nuckles, neck ect. - May 20th 2010, 08:21 PM

So I know that it's a mith that if you crack your joints too much you will get arthritus, but are there any other side affects that can be harmful? I crack my back around 3-4 times today and same with my neck...oh andI crack my nuckles countless times a day So I just wanna know if its safe to do or not.

I've no idea but i do the exact same! I don't think its harmful and its not shown to be directly related to arthritus as the popping is the release of excess gas, but i dont think its too good for you either

I think it can damage joints and what not if you do it a lot over a long period, stretches the ligaments or something like that.

Clicking your fingers? If there's no pain it's rarely harmful. Or so I've heard. It is an unlikely that clicking your fingers is a significant cause for arthritis. If you have a joint that is cracking and it is painful then you should see your doctor.

When you crack any joint it can be one of three things. Either the gas bubbles in the joint popping, which accounts for the noise. Tendons or ligaments cracking or popping as they move around the joint. Or arthritis, but it's uncommon for the first complaint of arthritis to be joint clicking, and it is more common in older patients.

I hope this helps.

I have been cracking my knuckles, back, and neck for years. I haven't had much problem with it except that if I don't crack them for awhile they get really stiff so now I have to kinda keep cracking them...Make sure when you crack your neck/back you do it slowly. If you jerk it too hard you could snap your neck by accident or hurt it in some other way, and you definitely don't want that.

Hope I helped

You're right about it not causing arthritis, that's definitely a myth. However, too much cracking can cause damage to your joints in the long run, it can sometimes loosen your joints and stretch your ligaments if you really over-do it. Every once in a while is perfectly fine though, I've heard it can even be beneficial.

It can damage your joints in the long run, but exercise does far more damage. Your entire weight is supported by your knees, so if you spend a lot of time walking then logically you're damaging your joints far more than by cracking them. An acquaintance of mine who was a seasoned hillwalker recently had to get her knee structure entirely replaced by a prosthetic, such was the damage...

I do this all the time too, but I heard that it doesn't cause arthritis. If it hurts when you crack your joints, you should probably see a doctor, though.

'The common parental advice "cracking your knuckles gives you Athertis" is not supported by any evidence. A hand in either group; however, habitual knuckle-crackers were more likely to have hand swelling and lower grip strength. Habitual knuckle-cracking was astudy concluded that there was no increased preponderance of arthritis of the ssociated with manual labour, biting of the nails, smoking, and drinking alcohol in the study participants and their families. It was concluded that habitual knuckle-cracking results in functional hand impairment and therefore should be discouraged' wiki xD

I did know that
