How to sanitize throat? - June 14th 2010, 02:15 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Every day I have to consume food that is prepared by dirty hands (trust me), so the germs will get in my throat. I don't want to breathe on stuff I don't want to get dirty.

Is there any edible mouthwash I can just swallow?

Also, is there a way to sanitize the eyes, nose and ears since my dirty hands have come in contact with them?

Well, most of the mouth washes I have seen use a high percentage of alcohol to clean the mouth. However, underage drinking is bad. There's a reason why poor people use mouth wash to get drunk. It can kill you though if you drink it.

Honestly, the body does a pretty good job of keeping germs out of it. Occasionally some may sneak in, but unless you are getting sick constantly, there isn't much to worry about. The body has mucus membranes to help protect the body from germs.

Have you considered talking to a doctor about your fear of germs?

Hey Love,

The body has several lines of defense with keep out germs. The first line of defense is your skin, it keeps things from getting in.

The second line of defense is mucus. There is mucus in your eyes, nose and throat and it traps all the bad germs.

Then there's the third line of defense and that is if it get's past your body's other natural defense mechanisms then you have the macrophages and memory cells that will recogise an antigen and the anitbodies and identify it take a piece of it, then go to the b-cells (aka memory cells) which will transfer it to the macrophages and it will set of a defense system so that they can tackle the antibody and then they eat it all up.

So your body takes a good system of making sure you're not too vulnerable to disease and what not.

If you're concerned with sanitisers, I'm not sure of any really, but my best advice would to be to wash your hands before you make something to eat. I mean by washing your hands with soap and water you can elminate many germs. Just remember to keep yourself clean I suppose.

There are eye drops that you can use once a night to help keep your eyes moist and clean. And just remember to brush your teeth and tounge and you should be fine.

Oh and I forgot to mention, if you feel as though your fear of germs entering your body is becoming too much of a presence in your life, I think that your best bet is to see your doctor and explain this to them because it could be a sign of something more such as OCD. But we are not professionals here so please go see your doctor if you feel as though it's something more.

I really hope this helped a bit. Please take care of yourself and PM me anytime if you want to talk more.

Thanks for the replies.

I have to eat the food my mom provides because she makes it for the whole family.

If the germs are trapped in my throat, will I breathe them out on other things? I don't like it when people breathe on me and my possessions and I don't wanna do the same. Will drinking water wash them down?

Like has already been said, see a doctor/psychiatrist.

EDIT: About your OCD, not the sanitizing thing.

Well the only way to really sanitize your throat is by mouthwash. You can gargle it once or twice a day. Don't swallow it and don't use it to much because then you will irritate your throat.

Well, Salt Water is a good rinse for the throat. You can drink a bit, but too much will upset your stomach.

I've known this feeling, but not so extreme, of wanting to cleanse my throat, since it felt clogged and dirty. You can get a decent bit of your throat with mouthwash if you tilt your head all the way back when you gargle.

No, doing so would just encourage your irrational behaviour, hence why you need to see someone.

Wonderful examples and advice. I agree with this. Your body has an immune system.

You could always take some Airborne you buy over the counter. It enhances your immune system.
