Question Asthma. - June 29th 2010, 08:59 AM

Just a question for those that have asthma.

I was diagnosed with asthma today after I noticed I was coughing loads more and feeling tightness in my chest.

I have an inhaler now but I just wanted to know how you guys have coped living with asthma. I know I can't smoke, not that I do. What other things do you guys suggest for me?

Thanks guys!

Re: Asthma. - June 29th 2010, 09:35 AM

I've had asthma for sixteen years and it's just part of life now really. I used to be a social smoker and it didn't actually affect it too badly, but I don't any more. Apparently swimming can be really good for asthmatics, as well as drinknig lots of water...I would maybe have a look-up about some breathing excercises that can help you in case you have an asthma attack, they can really help (: I'm not really sure what else to say but if you have any other questions about asthma feel free to throw me a PM, I've had it almost all of my life!!

I've has asthma for as long as I remember. You can get things to hold your inhalers and such. It's good to make sure you always carry one with you, especially when you're going to be exercising. If you're not smoking it shouldn't be a problem, try to stay away from other smokers and fumes. You may notice that it's worse if you have allergies around summer time. I know mine is. What inhalers have you been given?

Feel free to PM me if you need anything. (:

I've had asthma since i was about six or seven, you get used to carrying you inhaler everywhere. Swimming is meant to be good. I'd recommend finding out (carefully) what sets it off, since it can be different for everyone, like exercise and pollen get me, but one of my friends is affected by fresh paint.

I take an inhaler once a day called advair that provides long-term relief. I'm not sure if that's what you were talking about, but if it isn't, I'd look into it. It really helps me. I almost never have trouble breathing unless I'm sick or having allergies.

I've had asthma since I was 13, (19 now)

It sucks having to carry around an inhaler as a guy. Girls have purses they can put it in.

If I wear jeans and a tshirt, my inhaler is so bulky I can't keep it in my pocket.

I've always found just getting out in the fresh air helps - making your lungs work (exercise)
I've grown of my asthma now after having it for most of my life so far

If you are still having a tightness in your chest you may want to ask your doctor about preventative inhalers like advair.I've had asthma since I was 10 and I find it's always worse in the spring and summer due to my allergies.During those season I tend to take advair or flovent, though I used to take singular and it worked great for me but I don't think doctors like to prescribe it anymore due to side-effects.
