Cross training with stress fractures? - September 11th 2010, 02:53 PM

I was diagnosed with (another) tibial stress fracture about a week and a half ago.. but have been off running for two weeks. My orthopedic said cross training was okay only if I could put pressure on the leg without pain.. I'm almost at that point? I still feel pain when I'm walking without my brace (walking boot) but it's minimal, the area with the sfx is still slightly swollen though.

I'm really anxious to get back to cross training but I don't want to delay the healing process.. will stationary bike workouts aggravate the injury, is it okay to resume cross training if there's only minimal pain? I don't see my orthopedic again for almost three weeks, otherwise I would wait to ask him.. just, three extra weeks is a very long time to go without exercise when you're used to working out 2-3x a day

how could anyone ever tell you, you are anything less than beautiful?| PM Me

Hey there,

I'm honestly going to say no, because it doesn't sound as though the fracture is fully healed. Obviously if you're going to be exercising something that isn't healed it will be weak and more vulnerable to fractures and further injuries. Give it a couple more days and see how it's going. Have you tried some anti-inflammatorys (motrin/ibuprofen) and icing it when it needs to be? Also, are you using a tubigrip or something for support and to prevent breaks and/or swelling while you are normally exercising?

I hope this helps.

Just ease up on it. Another week or two off training isn't going to hurt you in the long run, but screwing up your leg by starting up too early most certainly could.

Also, have you tried swimming? That way you can start working out your cardiovascular system without putting any stress on your leg.
