Infection? - February 19th 2009, 12:37 AM

I cut my arm a little while ago (I don't remember how long, but at least a week), and when I did it, I think I hit something. Not a vein but some sort of roundish thing under the skin. It bled a lot but eventually (after a very boring half-hour in which I sat applying pressure and thinking about trees) it stopped. A few days later, it scabbed over and got pulled off. Today I poured some cleaning agent on it (I'm not sure what it was exactly, but it made a lot of fizzing in the wound that didnít occur in the other uninfected wounds, though it looked pretty cool).

It's not red around the cut, but it is a little swollen. I usually heal fast so I'm a little concerned.

How can you tell if a cut is infected, and what can you do about one that is?

first off. you hit subcutaneous fat, (the 'round' thing), it's a layer of fat underneath the skin. It's rather deep, and as a rule, takes a long time to heal.

the 'bubbling' stuff, that was hydrogen peroxide. Don't use it. It's what cowboys used to use to clean their cuts, and people in like, the 50's. It's harsh, and it kills tissue along with germs. (you need certain germs to fight off infection, kiddo.)

neosporin. and is the cut hot to the touch? you said it wasn't red, which almost all infections are. do you have a fever? do you feel sick?

be careful, because if a cut that deep gets infected, it won't just 'go away', it'll need a doctors visit. Keep the wound covered, except for at night, and apply neosporin on it almost constantly.

Yeah, I agree with what Becky said. neosporin will be your best friend. If you are feeling sick, you really should make an appointment with your doctor. I don't know how often you cut but if your cuts usually go away quicky and are suddenly not you could have gotten an infection from your last cut or a few cuts before and not even know about it. Cuts are also in your blood stream and don't just show up around the area you cut. There is Staff infections and other types of blood infections you need to be careful about. Make sure you sterilize your "utensils."

Be careful, and really, see a doctor if you are still worried after a few days (rule of thumb- 3 days if your really worried, 5 if ur not so worried but its looking bad or ur feeling sick)

It dos not sound like it is infected to me, but u should talk to someone about. It if it dose get infected Neosporin is a good idea. For a future reference don’t pore products like rubbing alcohol or portside on wounds it will make the scars worse. They are used to get dirt out not to clean. If needed to be cleaned soap and water will do fine.

I moved this to general health because I feel it has more to do with first aid than self harming itself. =)

I do agree that you should talk to someone about it if you're worried at all.

Try what was stated above, applying neosporin almost constantly, keeping it covered except for at night and monitor yourself; look for fevers, or any new symptoms that may appear over the next few days. If things don't look any better or if you start developing other symptoms please see a doctor as soon as you can.
