vaccine nerves - November 16th 2010, 07:37 PM

I am getting my tetanus/diphtheria/polio vaccine tomorrow at school and I'm really nervous. I hate needles and I'm really squeamish. It's mainly the thought that worries me because that's what causes me to feint. But I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how much it hurts and how big the needle is compared to the HPV vaccines that I had a while ago?

Hi there (:

Well, firstly as far as I am aware the polio vaccine is normally administered through some form of sugar cube so that's not going to cause you any problems...
Diphtheria and Tetanus is done together, you'll probably find the needle is around 1cm long, barely anything.

Just don't feel like you can't talk to the nurse that is going to be giving you your vaccinations. Let her know that you're feeling a little bit nervous about the entire situation, they're highly trained in these situations and most people are scared to have things like this done, he/she isn't going to think you're foolish or anything like that. They'll be able to guide you through the process nice and smoothly and it'll all be over before you know it.

Just remember, it's worth a 5 second prick on the arm than contracting one of these diseases
