Is it Just Allergies? Or Something Else? - December 30th 2010, 04:27 AM

I don't know if there is something wrong with my digestion, my immune system, if it's allergies, or if it's something else.
When I eat or drink certain things, like slushies, pop (ex: Pepsi, Root Beer, Coka-Cola), milk (most of the time nothing happens, but I get sick from ice cream, milk-chocolates, and I have a restriction on how much milk I can have a day), greasy food, and watermelon - I get sick. Sometimes it's nausea, diarrhea, a terrible stomach ache, headaches, and constipation (I am SO embarrassed for saying that, but I knew if I wanted it to be a little more understanding, I'd have to tell it all.). It's getting to the point where I can barely handle it.
The weird thing is, sometimes I don't even eat/drink those things, but I still get sick. My mom says that it's probably another thing that my immune system can't handle, but I'm still getting worried.
According to my Health teacher, it could possibly be high stress levels (which I have) that could also cause the problem. But I'm not too sure. When I was on vacation 2 months ago, I got so sick I was knocked flat and couldn't do anything for a day and a half. My mom thinks it was a touch of food poisoning, but she STILL didn't do anything about it. The crazy part is, I've been having these problems since I was 12, and I still haven't gone to a doctor.
Basically, what I'm asking is: Has this ever happened to you? How did you get rid of it? If it hasn't happened to you, what do you think I should do? Should I tell my mother that it's time I go to the hospital? Could this even remotely have something to do with my Severe Anxiety, my stress, or another problem I have? Should I maybe mention this to my counselor and see what she says?
I tried to explain this as little as I could, but as you can see, I tend to get off-topic quite a bit. Thanks for reading.

It sounds like somthing my aunt has.. I forget the name of it though! You should mention it to your counseler or mother or doctor. A doctor should be able to run some tests and help you figure it out cause i highly doubt its allergies.

Best of luck<3 (:

Hey

OKay, It could be related to stress.

But, it also sounds like a food intolerance. A food intolerance is where it affects your digestion, causes diarrhea and cramping pains etc. I don't think its an allergy because allergies cause skin reactions, or throat swelling, sore throats etc.

I have similar reaction to coffee, coke, hot chocolate and sometimes milk. But it doesn't happen every time I drink these things.

Have you tried looking and seeing what ingredients are similar in each product that you've noticed a reaction with?

I went to the doctors about a skin allergy recently, and he said there wasn't much I could do accept try and work out what I'm reacting to - and then cut the food out of my diet. He said to me, that if I found out what I thought I was reacting to, then they could take blood tests and test for a reaction that way - but even that method wouldn't be conclusive for some reason.

Its probably worth mentioning it to your Mum and seeing a doctor, just to see what they say.

Take a look at this, it has some good info - http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical...lerance1.shtml

I also thinks it is not just allergy. There is something wrong if it happens regularly. The best cure is to check out it to a doctor.he'll find out the reason and treat accordingly.

Well, if you were vacationing, it could very well be a bit of food poisoning in terms of being exposed to something your body couldn't handle like organisms in the water. When I travel, I always drink bottled water. It took me a while to get used to the water when I went to Ohio State.

I know with me, if I don't drink caffeine products for awhile but then I start drinking them, then I will get sick with diarrhea till my body gets used to it. Same with greasy food. Although, with the greasy food sometimes it's an issue with my gallbladder. Milk used to make me sick, but I don't have issues with it anymore.

What the other poster is thinking of is probably IBS, but the issue with IBS is that there's not much people can do except a change of diet.
