Wisdom Teeth - March 9th 2011, 07:58 PM

So I have to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed at once and I was wondering if anyone has had theirs taken out while you were awake. I'm asking because one dentist said that it'd be more expensive (which it is, more than getting my teeth taken out actually. And my insurance won't cover any of it.) and of course there is always the risk. Plus I hate the way I feel after I wake up from it. But this dentist said he preferred it if I were asleep. I don't know if this guy just wants more money, but i don't really want my parents to have to pay for me to be put to sleep. So is it really that awful to be awake during this?

I had all 4 removed the same day and I was awake. I'm not going to lie to you but it does hurt after the anesthesia wears out. My doctor also recommended that I was put to sleep but I didn't want to because it's more complicated when you are put to sleep.
But getting all 4 teeth at the same day is not that bad if you follow what your dentist tells you to do and take your medicine. I had them removed a Thursday and Sunday I went to the movies and everything was fine.

Hey there,
When I got mine out, I was put to sleep. Most people I know do choose to get put to sleep, and I think most dentists recommend that you do. I did have one friend who was awake for the procedure and was horrified because he could hear all the drilling and cracking noises of his teeth being take out. He also said you feel a lot of pressure when they're taking out your teeth. I guess if the loud noises and pressure doesn't bother you, you could also go for that option. Just depends on what you can handle. Hope this helped a bit.

Take care. :]

It depends on what exactly is wrong with them. If they are impacted...I cannot stress more that you should opt to be asleep. My dad did it and it was the worst pain he'd ever felt even with all the pain numbing stuff

You don't really feel it during, but I had one out when I was awake and we thought it would be an easy extraction....but I wound up having more roots than appeared on the x-ray and they were tangled around the tooth next to it. I was supposed to have two out that day, but with the struggle with the first one, they didn't.

While awake, they had to cut through my gum and cut out the tooth.

If your dentist says to stay awake, do it. If they say to be put out, do it. But I understand when money is a factor.

Re: Wisdom Teeth - March 10th 2011, 07:11 PM

It depends on how squeamish you are. I had to have two different surgeries because I had five wisdom teeth and there were complications. The first time I was asleep and I don’t remember anything. But the second time I wasn’t and quite frankly it really freaked me out. Hearing the sounds and watching someone do something like sew a hole up in your mouth can really be intense. Not to mention that just because you don’t feel pain, doesn’t mean you don’t feel them. You feel them jerking your jaw around, the pressure, while it’s not pain; can feel like it’s going to break. I would never do anything like that again awake just because how queasy the whole thing made me. But if you think you can handle it, I guess go for it. I personally prefer not to see/hear/feel all of those things.

Re: Wisdom Teeth - March 12th 2011, 12:12 AM

I have had to have severe cavities filled AWAKE and honesty its pure torture even with the numbing drugs, when I had my wisdom teeth out I was 15! I was the youngest in my family; my brothers had theirs out at 16-17 years old. I was sedated and I didn’t feel a thing, I know you don’t want your parents to pay for the sedation but I strongly suggest going the sedation route because it may be traumatizing to have them out while you’re awake and it could take a very long time. here is an idea get a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle and a line horizontally just a little bit to the top, like a T chart write pro's on one side and con's on the other write down the pro's and cons of each scenario of being awake and sedation so you'd need two pieces of paper. Good Luck
