Don't be nervous! It's going to seem really scary at first--the machine is huge and makes a lot of noise. It won't hurt, though, nothing touches you at all...and you get used to the noise after a minute or two. Try to relax...and once you do, you can take a nap until it's done!

Don't sweat it. I was terrified when I had my first MRI last summer, but once it started I was like, "...is this it?"

Good luck. <3

but I'm gonna try
to get better and overcome each moment
in my own way"

Re: mri - March 4th 2009, 07:56 PM

Well i've had about seven MRI scans i think it is! Anyways, don't worry about it - it's really nothing to worry about, at all. I was nervous before my first one, because i didn't know what to expect and how claustraphobic it would be and all that.

Basically, you'll go in and they'll ask you to remove any metal, may give you a gown to put on, may not.. it varies from hospital to hospital and if you have metal in your clothing/where you are being scanned. They'll ask you to lie down on a table and give you headphones to wear, they'll usually give you a choice of music to listen to.. but from my experience the choice is rubbish, so if you take your own CD you can get them to play that! Thats what i do anyway. In all, it'll probably last between 30 and 45 minutes. You don't feel anything, it's just VERY loud. Don't be freaked out by the noise because it's just the machine doing it's thing and it doesn't mean anything is going wrong - that's what i thought at first and was a bit freaked! lol.

So yeah, don't fret about it.. it'll be absolutely fine!

Re: mri - March 4th 2009, 08:04 PM

I've had an mri scan before, I was SO scared but it wasnt that bad. I thought I would be so claustrophobic but I foung it ok cause there is an opening at the other end where your head is.
Like Elle said you can take your own cd to listen to, and music can distract you if you are nervous.
The thing I found the hardest was keeping still for that amount of time

Im sure you will be fine though, good luck

Re: mri - March 4th 2009, 08:42 PM

Yeah the staying still thing is kinda annoying, what part of your body are you having scanned? I had my leg done, and they strapped my legs together so they wouldn't move about which was quite helpful! :]

Oh and i forgot to say, they'll also give you an emergency buzzer.. and at any point you just push the button and they get you straight out if you're not feeling good, or are panicking or whatever.!

I hope your MRI went well. It's not a dangerous procedure, and if you happen to get claustrophobic or scared, you can always vocally let them know or hit your emergency buzzer and they'll pull you straight out. Most places will give you ear plugs, if not a pair of headphones to listen to music, as the MRI machine itself can be a bit loud (banging, washer/dryer-like sounds). You can always ask the tech if they have headphones or earplugs for you to use, if they don't offer them.

If it's of your wrist, i'm pretty sure you won't/wouldn't have been in the tunnel thing, right? You just sit in a chair next to the machine with your wrist in it.. or that's what i've heard anyway.

Don't be nervous about it. I had one doen on my back and mine took 3 hours. Yours should be short and nothing to it. Good Luck.

I've had only 1 (on my head), but will have another one later (have to wait and see when). If anything, it's boring. Just lie down and some big thing spins around. Could've gone to sleep but the dumb thing was too loud.
