Jaw/Temple Pain - March 4th 2009, 07:37 PM

It wasn't until yesterday that I suddenly noticed a pain in my temple and my top jaw. I was innocently eating mike 'n ikes when suddenly I stopped chewing and I felt as if I'd just chew gum for 9 hours straight... an almost tired feeling in my jaw. Intesifies when I clench and hurts if I press my temples. I woke up this morning still in pain, but only when I clench my jaw, press against my temples or open my mouth widely. Any clue of the cause? Is it possibly from chewing all the candy and I had had my fair share of gum that day as well?

Do you find yourself clenching your teeth when you're nervous of anxious? If you do, you might not realise it until you actually know that you're doing it.

I do it and I'm even doing it now(nerves). The constant clenching gives you a sore head, jaw, teeth you name it. Are you nervous about anything? Just a suggestion anyway.

I think it's called bruxism.

It could be the start of a serious tension headache. Or a sinus infection. If you're really worried.. I'd call your GP.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Well, I have been having a bad week so clenching out of nervousness or tension could definitely be a contributing factor.

The pain's pretty much faded away now, though... save a very dull pain upon putting pressure on my temples. Just came and went I guess. If it returns, I may take a trip to the doc just to be sure.

It could be something related to your TMJ (temporomandibular joint), too. I know it sounds similar to what I experience if I don't wear my mouthpiece at night. (Caused by clenching/grinding teeth putting stress on the joint and surrounding ligaments.)

I get the exact same thing, just randomly sometimes when im eating..... I usually just stop eating whatever im eating and it usually goes away in like a few hours or something. Maybe you could try that? I never really thought about what it could be to be honest
