Crazy thirst.... - April 29th 2011, 09:45 PM

I'm drinking bottles and bottles of water a day, on top of my usual fruit juice and tea...I'm not doing any extra exercise or sweating...I just seem to be constantly dried out and thirsty. Plus, I keep getting really hot. We have the air con on at work, and usually I freeze but right now, I'm really burning up, and wearing a full suit doesn't help.
I wasn't sure if these were side effects cause I started on prozac about 3 weeks ago and was quite nauseous for a while, but then I seemed fine. This has started up over the last week.

Also, my appetite has gone haywire, I can't stand anything sweet and I'm craving fruit and salad like crazy. Mainly cucumber. Lots of it. Sometimes I cant stand to eat, sometimes I'm waking up at 2am desperate for a huge roast dinner. HELP.

P.S. Don't think I'm pregnant...I haven't had sex in like, 2 months and I'm on the mini-pill, I never miss one. Immaculate conception?!!!

I can't think of anything else it could be other than the prozac you started. Although it's only just come on suddenly side effects of medication effect everyone differently so your body may only just be experiencing the side effects.

If you're concerned then I'd suggest going to see your doctor and just asking them to make sure everything's fine

Hmm... this sounds a bit like diabetes. Tell-tale signs include excessive thirst and increased hunger. Also you implied you're craving sweet things...?

There are other possibilities but this was the first one that came to mind. Your doctor will probably know better than me; I'd advise seeking a professional opinion.

Other symptoms of diabetes include fatigue, excessive urination, genital itching and weight loss. Keep track of what your body's doing and if you experience any of these, definitely tell your doctor about it.

NOT sweet things. My sister made cupcakes and I wanted to barf. But fruit. And salad.
And I'm tired...losing weight. I have an appointment next friday to talk about the pills, but to me it seems so coincidental with the prozac that I figured that's what it was. I'm just SO thirsty

Sorry to say but it does sound like diabetes. Excessive thirst is one of the main symptoms. You should go to docs and get it checked out

Ah sorry, mis-read your last post. Fruit and salad because of your thirst, you think? They're quite watery.

I would definitely mention the weight loss and tiredness along with thirst, and see whether your doctor thinks it's the prozac, or something to do with your blood sugar.

Re: Crazy thirst.... - April 29th 2011, 11:43 PM

There are 2 main types of diabetes: diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus. From what you've said, you could have either. Insipidis is blood-sugar related, whereas mellitus is based on dysfunctional neuro-endocrine functioning, with the key symptom of excessive thirst. For mellitus, the kidneys do not properly regulate water. It could also be insipidus especially if it's hyperglycemia because that does produce the symptom of excessive thirst. For mellitus, insulin is not the concern, rather it's ADH (vasopressin), normally secreted by the hypothalamus of the brain. When it is secreted, it travels to the kidney and makes part of it more permeable to water.

However, there are alternatives, other than diabetes inspidus and mellitus or pregnancy. These would include Crohn's disease (thirst is mostly for cold liquids or anything releasing cold liquids), hyperparathyroidism, HHNS, diabetic ketoacidosis, hypertension, Bartter Syndrome, Gitelman Syndrome, etc... .

In the end, the likely suspect is the kidneys.

I might phone NHS direct and ask them. Just for peace of mind. I can't get an earlier appointment with my doc, so I have to wait.

Thanks for the help guys
