It's the blood. I believe it's the blood that starts to smell once it is oxidized, or is exposed to air. It's more noticeable when women use pads instead of products used internally like tampons and menstrual cups since it allows for the blood to become oxidized. You can try to keep clean as best as you can and use tampons, but other than that I'm afraid there isn't a lot you can do.

As a side note, disposable pads don't really allow for sufficient air flow, so the humidity can be a factor if you use pads. They also have a distinct smell as we all are aware of, so that is something you should take into consideration.

Like Angel said it's just the smell of the blood. It tends to smell more when exposed to air. It's nothing to worry about but if it makes you feel uncomfortable then tampons would help keep the smell to a minimum.

Also, when I'm on my period I use pads but every day I use the shower head to give myself a quick wash down there. I don't use any soap or anything though, just the water.

Take care
