Exclamation Health Problem: Anxiety or? - August 17th 2011, 08:46 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

So a while ago, about 2 years, when I was borderline suicidal I tried to overdose on pills. Which obviously didnt work, probably because I didnt know too much back then, but I took about [EDIT] advil pills. A couple months after that I took pills again..but only [EDIT] advils at the same time.
Then a couple months after all of this, I started to get stomach pains. I get severe social anxiety while I am taking a test or if the room is full of people and is quiet for longer than 5 minutes. I cant tell if this is anxiety (because most people with anxiety get chest pains), or if this is something else.
The pains that I get are in the lower part of my abdomen, I guess near my kidney? But Im 90% sure that nothing is wrong with my kidney though.. The pain usually feels like a needle injection, something repeatdly stabbing me, and my stomach or something? (I really dont know what) Will make very loud noises, which is both very embarrassing and painful. But Like i siad, it only happens if I think about it too much, which is when im in either of those two listed situations
So can this just be anxiety? Or something else? I cant go to a doctor for this. They just say its nothing and that Im fine. So I have no idea.
I would GREATLY appreciate it if someone would help me out with this.

Thank you.

Hey Andy!

To me, this does sound like it could be a form of social anxiety as no two of us are the same, and we all experience it in different ways. Funnily enough, I was terrible with it when I was little - I barely remember - but apparently I said to my parents that it made my tummy hurt, so it sounds very similar. If the doctors have OK'd you, then it's unlikely to be anything serious as they would most likely have run tests if they were concerned, but if it eases your mind a bit, maybe try getting a second opinion?

Also, food for though - my sister suffers from stomach migraines which are caused by tension - she describes it as a sharp, knotting pain, although if it's lower abdomen then I'm unsure, but it is unlikely to be your kidneys as they're located higher and at the back.

As for the social anxiety, well, it can be a right effort to deal with but it is possible to beat! There is a board with advice for Anxiety issues, and if you struggle with them it might be a good idea to see what others have to say. I always found that picutring my anxiety in my mind as a physical objects worked - I used to visualise it, mentally scrunch it up and tell it I wanted it to bugger off, then throw it away as far as I could. Now it sounds silly, but it worked wonders for me.

We all deal with these things in different ways, you just need to figure out what helps you and then teach it a lesson!

Hope I helped, keep your chin up!

Anxiety effects different people in many different ways. If all of this happened after you took the advil pills, then it probably is not caused from them. Your body has the ability to fight off toxins that enter the blood stream. Also, your liver would most likely be damaged from an overdose, and even still, organs are pretty good about getting rid of those toxins. This doesn't mean that if you keep doing it, it won't have lasting effects.

I personally think it's anxiety, and this is coming from someone who has deals with severe anxiety too. Just because your chest isn't hurting does not mean that it's not anxiety. Sometimes anxiety can cause your heart to race, and thus causes chest pain, but this doesn't happen for everyone. I never had chest pain until recently. My anxiety affected me differently. For example I often go through periods of time when I feel like I can't eat. Doctors did everything they could to figure out what was wrong, but it was ruled as a severe case of anxiety.

Anxiety wears on your body physically. A lot of people don't realize this, and your body is trying to tell you that it is under a lot of stress. It's not healthy, but it is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. It's amazing how many different things can actually be caused by anxiety!

However, at the end of the day, the best thing to do is talk to a professional and explain everything to them. Most likely they can refer you to someone else who can really help you, or they may even give you something that can help calm you down which will ease the physical symptoms at least.
