Third bout with Hemorrhoids, oh the joy! - August 30th 2011, 12:07 AM

So, I've had hemorrhoids a few times before. The one major one I had, I couldn't sit down for a week without being in pain - it slowly went away, but I assume it stuck around just to spite me. Back at it again, now. On day 2.

It's a pain in the butt, so to speak. It hurts, but giving it a little time, and sticking out my day is pretty much all I can do. I've switched back to my high fibre diet, and it seems to work.

The one thing I have to ask though, is it NORMAL for a kid at the age of 18 to experience hemorrhoids 3 times in 2 years? I eat healthy, so I don't really know what could be affecting it. I drink 1 can of energy drink a day, which stops today. I smoke, which probably isn't good for my body, but doesn't really affect your digestive tract at all. I'm also pretty active, so it shouldn't be from sitting too long. I eat a fair amount of fibre, which should be a good thing. But I dunno, they just don't seem to like me at all.

I also have another question: do energy drinks irritate hemorrhoids? I know caffeine acts as a natural laxetive, but this is ridiculous.

Hopefully clear by day 5 so I can actually get back to normal life.

DAY 2
Oh, what a wonderful day! Not. I walked, I took trains, I sat on rock hard seats, I walked up and down stairs, I took elevators, I ran to train stations... It was a pretty painful day. It's nice to know I can come home and take a shower, and settle into something looser for the night in. It's been a bit painful today, but my usual fibre supplements that I get from my chemist no longer exist (I don't really know which brand), so I've had to eat fibre, rather than take fibre. I've eaten like I've never eaten before, simply to a) take my mind off the pain and b) get some fibre into my system. First bowel movement wasn't too messy, but it didn't really change much, either. Feels good to sit down, though, sometimes. It doesn't feel too good at the moment, but you get the reason why. Anyway, I have approximately 7 hours of homework to do infront of a computer, that I'm going to try and get done lying on my stomach, but since I have a bad angle scholiosis, that's also going to be painful. Which is the lesser of two evils? I'll let my back decide that one.

Still unable to take a bath! I want our bathroom to be fixed already so I can take one.

Quick question: what's the best way to sit on an office chair with hemorrhoids? I've been sitting at my desk with a soft pillow underneath me, but not sure whether that is doing me more harm than good. Last time I had them, I basically laid down for days and didn't get up in fear of aggravating it, but this time is different. I'm not in AS MUCH pain, but still comparable, and still trying not to aggravate it to the point that my last one was.

End of day two: in a considerable amount of pain, even lying on my stomach. Hoping it won't get worse, 'cause I'm going to have to take days off Uni just to recover - wonder what my rents will say when I tell them that I can't even walk up our own stairs, let alone face the possibility that the University elevators are screwed. Don't have any prep-h lying around; nor do I think I need any at the moment. Last time I used prep-h, it did nothing and I was still popping paracetamol like it was candy. In fact, last time I actually overdosed on ibuprofen; woke up in the middle of the night and my legs were on fire, felt like i'd just stepped out of flames - took me three hours and a shit load of ice buckets to cool them down. But I digress.

Gonna find it hard to sleep at this rate. Completely overhauled my diet earlier. I'll still eat whatever I get for dinner, but my daily intake is always going to consist of at least 90% of my RDI of dietary fibre. Can't keep getting this... Especially when Uni's becoming so hectic now, especially since I started volunteering at Legal Aid. Thank god my next shift isn't till next wednesday. Again, I digress.

Let's just get through tonight before we worry about tomorrow.

Plus, I think I've come down with something. Hearing out of my ears is at 50% of normal. People have to yell at me just so I can hear them. Don't really know why my body is screwing with me so badly. Does my body just not like me, at the moment?

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Day Three
Don't really know why I'm sharing these details with everyone. Seems to be pointless at times. And I would edit my first post to put this in, but the edit button is gone. Must be too long of a post. :P

Anyway, day three hasn't been TOO bad - since it's my only day off for the week. Still sticking it out - rents don't know yet, probably won't tell them. Pain is considerably less. Eaten fibre packed foods all day, which is good. Sticking with the fibre tomorrow - might pick up some multivitamins as well just to get me back on track, though I'm not sure whether it's all that good to be taking multivitamins with hemorrhoids. Constipation may ensue, I suppose.

So, I'm back on my comfortable chair. Pain seems to be worse at night than during the day. Not sure why that is - considering all the movement I do during the day. But still, taken ibuprofen all day and the swelling seems to have gone down, and the pain with it. Each day gets better - though we'll see tomorrow whether it gets worse.

Had to sleep with two pillows underneath my butt last night just to make the pain lessen slightly (I laid there from 11pm till 1am in pain, trying to figure out what to do). Decided to sleep without the headphones in my ears because I figure that's where my hearing loss comes from (did you know having headphones in your ears increases bacteria build up by 70,000%? what a shocking statistic, I know) and it's not like my music is loud or anything, just having them in your ears while you sleep is shocking. I digress again.

Nevertheless, pain is still exquisite but not too bad. Enough to get me through the day tomorrow, I hope. We'll see.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

I'm so sorry, this sounds extremely painful May I ask why don't you want to tell your parents? I think it would really help to see a doctor. There are a lot of over the counter fibre supplements you could try. I see ads for Metamucial all the time, it seems reputable! I'd stay away from energy drinks and caffiene, and just drink a LOT of water. Your hearing issues could definitely be because you're getting a cold or flu. That often happens when you're tired, stressed, or going through some other kind of health issue as well unfortunately, because you're immue system's down Eat a lot of fruit, they contain a lot of vitamins and are also good for digestion. I'm not a doctor so don't really know what to tell you, but I really think it would be good if you went and saw one. They might be able to perscribe something that could help with the hemorrhoids, or at least the pain. I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON <3 x

Thanks Ella for your input. I'm not really one to tell my parents embarassing things, 'cause they like to poke and prod. But nevertheless, if it's still like this by saturday (as mum's told me we have a full day of gardening), I'll definitely tell them. Don't really want to be out in the garden performing a massive amount of movements that might strain muscles and stuff.

I've got a load of fruit at the moment. Been downing water melon like it's candy, but still no luck yet. I do have a very bad immune system, so my doctor tells me - that may be the reason why I have these compounding amount of infections and blood clots and etc. that keep hitting me like freight trains.

Doctors typically won't perscribe anything, especially pain medication as things like Vicadin can cause constipation, leading to even worse hemorrhoids. A shame, really. Last time I went, they gave me hydrocortisone cream/ointment, because my last bout was with external thrombose hemorrhoids, where as this time, I believe it's internal prolapsed - which aren't as worse, but can still be quite painful.

I might look into Metamucial tomorrow. Thank you, Ella. (:

Day 4
This morning was absolutely horrible! I woke up at 7am, just as usual to get to Uni on time. I couldn't walk when I got out of bed. It felt like I had been stabbed in the butt (yes, I know what getting stabbed is like). So, I stumbled around pretty much on my hands and knees till I got a lift to the train station. On the train, I was idiotically sitting, so decided to stand. Sitting wasn't painful. Standing certainly was. So, then I was idiotically standing... and in pain... and with nowhere to sit because I'd offered my seat to an elderly lady.

Got through Uni okay. Sat through a two hour lecture. Stood up and it felt like I now had two hemorrhoids, which I don't (as far as I can tell - who knows when you've got a lump the size of a grape in the way?). So, I stumbled my way down back streets till my mate decided it was time to get some lunch - had multigrain bread with some healthy shit on it. Getting used to this fibre diet.

Walked a kilometre to the train station, and spent the next hour sitting again. Hurt like a bitcvh.

Back at home now. Sitting on my comfy pillow. I swear my ass only feels good after I've sat on this pillow for an hour. Numbs it. (: But that could be attributed to the 6 ibuprofen I've taken today just to get by. Almost got hit by a car today 'cause I was so out of it.

Ears are still blocked. Coughing is hard, but I have to do it... despite the fact that it kills my butt. Real chesty cough. Sore head now - even AFTER those ibuprofen. FML. We'll see how the night goes. Gonna be a painful night, if today's any indication.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Re: Third bout with Hemorrhoids, oh the joy! - September 1st 2011, 01:49 PM

End of day 4: major thing I've probably learned from this experience is... Don't ignore things your body is telling you. If your butt is sore, don't ignore it and pretend nothing is wrong. Then again, don't go overboard and assume it's the worst of the worst. But if something is really pointing that something is out of the ordinary, it probably is out of the ordinary and you should do your best to prevent it from getting worse.

But the pain isn't so bad tonight. I'm either learning to tolerate it or it is healing. I don't particularly want to do heavy lifting on saturday, and knowing my parents, they'd assume it to be an excuse - despite the fact that I've already told them I have them, and they seem to think that everyone can just push through the "slight" pain.

And again, I don't really know why I'm making these little day by day things. I hope the moderators don't mind, because it just helps me organize my thoughts and get things back on track.

On a scale of one to ten, pain today is probably a 7. Two days ago it would have been an 8.5, so definitely getting there. But again, could be because I'm popping ibuprofen every 5 hours to ensure that the pain is minimal - and the anti-inflammatory properties may help, but not sure yet.

Other bad habits today. Ate more fibre than ever today and drank a massive amount of water, but all I seem to be doing is going through the motions. Tomorrow will be painful, because I probably would have preferred to take it off, but I can't because I have to make a report on an assignment due next week - maybe I could get the information from my tutor or notes from a classmate. I don't really know yet. I have a few people that owe me huge favors, so I might pull one of those strings and just rest up tomorrow.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Re: Third bout with Hemorrhoids, oh the joy! - September 2nd 2011, 04:28 AM

Day 5
Day 5: interesting day, really. It's been one long ass day of walking to and fro. I woke up this morning, sore but not as sore as yesterday morning. Took my 4 ibuprofen and was on my way. Got a lift to the station and caught my train. I figure it would be better for me to stand, despite the fact that it hurt more than sitting down. Sat through a one hour lecture and then stood around for half an hour talking. Had another Bowel Movement. My doctor assures me blood is normal with internal hemorrhoids, so I guess that I'm not too worried about that, but it's just a psychological thing. I mean, the blood is just another sign pointing towards me not getting any better. Hopefully by the next bowel movement, none of that is an issue. I just hope it doesn't turn out in the slim chance that I've strangulated it and it's burst - I'd be in a lot more pain now if that were the case, I think. I can still feel the blood is all.*

Anyway, enough with the disgusting talk. It's making me feel sick.*

I really hope my mother doesn't make me do gardening tomorrow. I can only just tolerate doing house work, let alone her intensive ventures in the garden. I really also hope this fucking pain goes away.*

Pain at this very moment is about a 5. This morning was an 8. We'll see how it goes, I think.*

Come to think of, last time around might not have been as bad as this time. Maybe I lumped it with the 3 day hangover I had, therefore it seems worse. The last time did not bleed and gave me little grief, really. I still went to school everyday and sat for ages, but it seemed fine. I think last time I had hemorrhoids, they were a 6-7 whilst this one is a 7-8. Not really sure. I'm really tired now though...

Let's see what tonight is like.

Edit: so, I've looked at a few websites. Seems the type of hemorrhoid that I have will generally take 3-4 months to clear properly without surgical treatment. I would like to be back on my feet by then, as it is very distressing. But I don't particularly want to go to see a specialist either, because I know that a) my doctors won't investigate problems around the anal area (fucking doctors) b) I need a recommendation from a GP before I can go and see a specialist and c) my parents seem to think it's no big deal! My mum likes to think she's had the "worst possible scenario," but she refuses to let me use her insurance to see a GP about it.
Any ideas?

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Re: Third bout with Hemorrhoids, oh the joy! - September 3rd 2011, 06:05 AM

Day 6
Barely any pain last night. I had a shower, got out and thought something worse was wrong with me because there was no pain. It gradually came back, though. Probably just numbed my ass in the shower somehow.

Barely any pain today, as well. Walking is difficult, but pain is very minimal compared to the other day. Feeling pretty good about it, though I know my next bowel movement will probably make things worse. Hoping it's pretty much clear by monday.

No gardening today; just house work. Saved by Father's Day, come to think of it. Had to do shopping instead.

Still feel a LOT of pressure on my lower intestines. I've been told, if you need to move your bowels, move them - even if the urge is minimal. To me, I can't tell if this is an urge. Most of the time I think it's the hemorrhoid playing the urge on me, but I can't be sure. I don't want to sit on the toilet just to find that I'm constipated or something, 'cause that'll make it worse. Not really sure what to do.

On an off note, my last three hemorrhoids that have gotten to this similar stage were all made really bad by alcohol. This time... no alcohol. Not a great feeling to know that you can still get them, despite your worst habit no longer existing. :P

Now I have to walk to the supermarket to buy stuff for dinner then carry it ALL the way back. FML.

End, Day 6:
Oh. My. God.
No pain. But blood. The blood. Oh, my god, the blood. Usually, hemorrhoids are only supposed to bleed after doing a bowel movement... not when you're just sitting around doing nothing. My underwear is blood stained (slightly, anyway) and keeps sticking to my butt. This isn't fair...

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Day 7.
pain is none today. Pressure, yes, but only pain when it gets irritated. It is still large, but thankfully not as large as what it was on day 2. Blood is still present, but definitely not as much. I think I may have popped it accidentally (or at least the blood clot may have burst) and I'm assured by my doctor that it should be okay, but if it continues bleeding for more than a week, I should head to the ER.

I'm off the ibuprofen for now. Will take more later in the day because the anti inflammatories are a charm.

Still on fibre diet - but nothing in the house has fibre in it, really. So multigrain cereal and porridge pretty much all day.

Will check back tomorrow.

Oh, and shower + drying your butt with cold air from a hair dryer = totally orgasmic.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.
