Preventing colds/flus - September 23rd 2011, 11:23 PM

I'm SICK of getting colds all the time >.> I feel awful right now. My head is killing, I feel like I've swallowed sandpaper and my nose is blocked.

How could I help prevent them? I know taking zinc tablets once a day helps your immune system and so does eating your five-a-day but what else helps?

I'm sick of this.

Honestly, the only way to never get a cold is to stay inside all day and never interact with anyone or anything but I wouldn't recommend that.

There are so many different strains out there that there's nothing you can do to really prevent them. Obviously a healthy immune system means you're body can deal with colds a lot faster but symptoms do still usually show. Other than that keep up with a good hygiene regime and try not to be around someone who has a cold to reduce the risk of infection.

As a side note, if you live until 100 then (apart from rare mutations and as long as you've come into contact with all the strains) it's unlikely you'll ever have a cold again, something to look forward to

Cara is correct that there really aren't any sure preventative things to do as there are many strains. Build your immune system up, wash hands regularly, don't touch your face, cover your sneeze/coughs, and exercise regularly. One main thing is to relax.

As soon as you suspect you have a cold, drink more fluids than usual, stay away from caffeine or spicy foods (sweet foods too). And rest. This can prevent the cold from getting worse or from bronchitis turning int pneumonia, etc.

While it's true that there's nothing to do to prevent colds 100%, the best thing you can do to lessen the chance of catching one is frequent hand washing. That's right, hand washing.

The virus that causes the common cold is spread thru droplet infection, it's like a fine mist that goes every where. So, you can touch it and pick it up on your fingers. So, when ever you touch a mucous membrane or opening to yourself, such as rubbing your eyes or nose, or eating...you can introduce the virus to your body.

Frequent hand washing! It's the best prevention out there.
