Mouth ulcer. - December 30th 2011, 11:21 PM

It's huge I have it right on my lip. I've never had one this big before. It hurts when I eat and drink, I have to drink everything through a straw. I've been using bonjela, salt and marmite (apparently it helps) but it just hurts and doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Is there anything to stop it from hurting?

The most amazing thing i've come across is a thing called 'Orajel' it's a gel which can be applied to mouth ulcers and a whole variety of mouth complaints. It has a local anesthetic and believe me, it works! I hope your local pharmacy has it and it's not too expensive <3

Orajel does well for pain, but you should still put some healing ointments on it. Orajel can run anywhere from $5-18 depending on size and brand. I know from my CVS we got the CVS equivalent for a little over $6.

It should stop being so painful in a couple days and they generally go away in a week or two. You can also take some over the counter pain meds such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Advil, etc.

If it gets larger, spreads, you get more, or you have it for more than 3 weeks - see your doctor.

So you have gray hair and you're only 26

that's just another reason I love you...

The main thing is not to pick it. It's very tempting... I know, but it makes it drastically worse. If you ever have the urge to, even with your tongue... then it's probably better for you to punch the wall instead to distract you. More sensibly though, I think a lot of people pinch themselves to distract themselves from things like this.

At night, try not to sleep with your face down in the pillow. Putting even a bit of pressure on the ulcer will aggravate it a lot. You might even want to sleep in an upright sofa, unless you find it too uncomfortable. Sleeping in a sofa makes it difficult for you turn in your sleep and irritate the ulcer.

Apart from these tips... Bonjela has worked for me well so far. I haven't had to resort to anything more.

If you've got some spare time, read this:

But don't if you're easily triggered. If you're not easily triggered then go ahead.
