Unhappy They still dont know whats wrong with me )'= - January 10th 2009, 06:11 PM

Okay this might be kinda long. And its basically just a rant lol
Okay so I've been sick for a looooooooooooong time, like 3 months now. It all started in October and I was sick with something for a week and i finally went to the doctor and they told me I had strep throat and they put me on the maximum dose of antibiotics they could for someone of my size. So after I started feeling better. But at about the 8th day of taking them I started to feel sick again. So I went back to the doctor and they tested me for mono and the test came back negative. And so they sent me for a full screening of bloodtests and the tests came back saying I had Celiac disease. So they then referred me to Gastroenterologist (a stomach guy lol). So went to see him for the first time at the start of December and we told him all my symptoms and everything and he said that my symptoms dont match up with Celiac disease. So they sent me for more blood tests and some other tests, and I still dont know the results for those either. So on Thursday I'm going for a scope and I'm sooooooooooooooo nervous!!!! I'm scared I'm gunna like die or something when they put me under )= I'm just tired of being sick and being away from people for soooo long. I've hardly been to school over the last 3 months and I' just really stressed and I'm getting more and more depressed as the time drags on. This has just been a horrible experiance all together and I want it to be over with already!
Also has anybody else had a scope done or any kind of medical procedure where they had to be put under? If so was it scary and stuff like that?

I assume you are talking about endoscopy. I would also assume its Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, if you know that would be helpful.

As for going under, it depends. The procedure is not painfull at all and recovery is very quick unless you under go anesthesia or sedatives.

The worst thing you will probably have to face is a sore throat, however complications can occur and I won't lie to you.

Complications can include bleeding, perforation and cardiopulmonary problems. However the complication rate is very very low, however it is something you should be aware of. All this is because a foriegn body is being forced down the bronchi tree.

Also while your under you will be monitored. ECG to monitor heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation.

All of this monitoring will tell a trained Anesthetist how you are coping and if the sedative needs to be increased etc.

This procedure is minimal and its not going to damage you or cause pain, however it will cause discomfort and I will assume thats why they are going to put you under. It also stops you moving.

You have nothing to be afraid of and it's just like going to sleep the only difference is its more of a knock out effect rather than a sleep. Don't worry.

Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy is a mouthful even for me!

I would not worry yourself with the complications.

I hope they find whats wrong because the next step is explorative surgery!

It's not because it also means your running out of options because they don't know what it is.

Diagnosis is very hard at times, because it is possible that this is a multiple of things and not just one.

But lets not get too far out of context. Have these tests done and then tell me when you've got the results. Ask the Doctor for the exact name because you want to research it yourself, ask him to write it down or spell it for you.

Tell me, and I can tell you the truths about such and such and the alternatives there are to what Doctors offer. Sometimes Doctors will offer poorer options due to numbers of patients and also to score of your medical insurance.

Such is life.

Edit:

just noticed your from Canada, afaik you have free health care right?

Thought as much. Then you are lucky you will most likley get the procedure you need. However still get the name for me of what you have once they find out (lets stay positive!) =)

I would be very interested to know, I'm training to be a Doctor so this type of thing is my bread and butter!

Pretty much summed up what I was gonna say. Doctors do this all the time, and they wouldn't be allowed to if it wasn't safe.

I've had IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) for the last 12 years and when I was about 7 and going through the process of finding out what it was that was wrong I had a scope done. I got myself all worked up (As you would at 7 years old!) and there really was nothing to it. You don't feel a thing, and I was only in recovery for about an hour and a half, although I did get put under using anesthesia so I was kept in the hospital for a few more hours. Either way, I know it's hard not to psych yourself out, but it really is nothing to worry about and it will be beneficial to finding out what is wrong with you. It's honestly a lot better than going through the series of tests I went through before agreeing to the scope. Good Luck!

I have not had the same tests done but went for about 6 months with no diagnosis and then finally after those 6 months and numerous tests I got a diagnosis that was basically a catch all of well we don't really know so we are going to say it is this since you are ever so slowly improving. . . It is rather frustrating and scary.

Really though all you can do is hang in there. Get a second opinion on things if you can but most the time it won't be figured out. I had a friend who it took over 4 or 5 months to find out she had kidney problems. I would just suggest asking the doctor a lot of questions, why you are getting tests done, what else can be done, what the next step is and so on. Questions are good and can be the most satisfying when you have no idea what is wrong.

If you notice you do better if you eat certain foods or can establish some pattern that will allow you to go back to school I would try to figure one out so that you can continue going to school and get some of your life back.

and always feel free to rant about it. I know it can help you feel just a little bit better.

I have found certain foods that I am fine eating. But the doctor is making me eating the foods that cause me pain in stuff, cause if I dont eat them the tests will come back negative if I do have something and I'm not eating these foods. If that makes sense

Is it possible to eat those foods a day or 2 going into the doctor. Maybe ask about having an allergy test done as well. But otherwise I'd just not eat the foods. Why make yourself sick if you don't have to be sick. I'd just tell the doctor look I know if I avoid these foods (list them) then I will feel better. Tell him you want to be in school and feel better so for now you will avoid those foods. Also what kinds of foods are they-- I don't mind doing some research for you and see if I can come up with anything. Sometimes it is good to look things up and go in to the doctor and ask could it be this or this. They will know more than either of us but they can rule it out but it might spark something else in their head that it could be.

A Doctor will not just simply overlook a simple thing like that. Also the very fact that that she has been through so many tests that it means she had different Doctors. Different opinions.

All these Doctors will have not over looked something simple like food allergy.
Also Doctors dislike people that have been on the internet, because people dont fully understand what they have read and they misout key information such as underlying conditions etc etc.

If I were you, I would simply get on with these Tests. They are there to help you, research the topic yourself so you understand what is going to happen to you. Of course ask questions if you dont feel comfortable with something and you want reassurance etc. But dont start suggesting that it could be such and such a disorder haha =)

Hi there. My son had a lot of problems with his digestion and intestines and he had gastroenteritis when he was born, and he had to have what your talking about (I can't spell it though :P) He was only a few days old and he had to go under for it, so I can understand how scared you are.

My little man was fine though, and I'm sure you will be too. Doctors do this all the time and they are very, very good. I have absolutely no faith in doctors (and the NHS as a whole), but they did a brilliant job and they really are good at what they do. You'll be fine and hopefully they will find out what is wrong with you. A diagnosis is always good, even if its not what you were expecting or wanting at least its the end of tests and not knowing.

Good luck, all the best. xx

I was not suggesting that it had not been done but that it might be something adding to the cause. and I would differ on the internet. If someone with an education looks something up you can find possible solutions. You don't go in convinced you have something but rather offer a suggestion to a doctor. Even Doctors get stumped sometimes and need suggestions.

If I were you I'd look things up, try to find a possible answer myself because sadly a lot of people nowadays actually can help figure out things they have. If you have 20/20 symptoms maybe it is something to look into. Of course it does require a lot of research on your part, you can't base anything off of just one website.

Most importantly Question your doctor, tell them you are upset not knowing what is wrong, Let them know how this is affecting you in other ways.

and the info I am giving you is based off the background knowledge I have and based of studies that I have studied

I was scoped and had a pH probe very recently. It seems scary, but it isn't that bad at all. The worst part is the I.V. Also, your throat might hurt a little, but that's all.(I am assuming it is an upper one).

i don't really know what to say about what might be wrong with you, because i have no idea. but i really sympathise with you when it comes to the whole not being able to go to school and see everyone and getting really down about it all. i haven't had a scope, but i've had a few general anaesthetics and i was terrified before my first one, but really theres nothing to it.

the best thing to do is stay calm and try not to worry, the doctor will have carried out this procedure thousands of times. don't worry if you have lots of questions, don't be afraid to ask anything, even if it sounds stupid, they will have dealt with people in your situation many many times before.

good luck with all the tests and i hope they find out whats wrong with you so they can get you better!.

So I find out what's wrong with me in 3 weeks. And they said it does look like I have Celiac disease after all but we cant be sure till the results come back. And they said I might also have a secondary problem too. But I'm just happy I dont have to wait for much longer
