Unhappy itchy dry nipples.... - February 29th 2012, 04:34 PM

Sorry if its tmi but I am suffering from really, really, maddening itchy nipples. Not the rest of my boobs, just the nipples. They are also really dry and have flaky skin ?! What can I do about this ? Is it normal ? Do you think its the cold or hormone related ?

Could be a multitude of things really. I doubt it's the cold unless you're running around topless (; But it's possible.

Have you recently changed washing detergent or shower gels? A reaction to something like that would result in the side effects you've mentioned.

Seems you can also get eczema in that area so if you've a history of it then it's something you should look into.

My best advice is try changing detergents and mositurise regularly preferably with something like E45 cream, that'll help tackle natural dry skin and eczema if it happens to be that. 2 birds, one stone.

If it's not getting better after a week or two of this then I'd go and see your GP. I doubt it would be anything serious but it's not the kind of annoyance you want to live with day in day out.

The only thing Iíve been putting on them is some Nivea moisterusier after Iíve been in the shower.

Itís been on and off since the start of winter, but the past couple of weeks Iíve started going swimming again and itís been getting worse.

Iím hoping with the weather starting to get better the sun and fresh air will help clear it up as Iím not too keen on going to the doctorsÖ

The chlorine in pools will definitely not help dry skin. After you get out of the shower/bath/pool, EVERY time, you will need to spot dry. So just dab the towel, not rub. Then apply a moisturizer. Do not use hand sanitizer or water. Those will dry your skin out more (though, I doubt you'd put sanitizer on your nipples )

So the best I can tell you:
1. Dab/spot dry. Don't rub a towel on your skin.
2. Moisturize immediately after you dry. After every bath/shower/swim.

If it doesn't start getting better in a couple weeks, or worsens quickly within the next week, I really suggest a doctor.

It could be seasonal because its winter. The same thing happens to me sometimes. I just put lotion on and it clears up normally. It happens to alot of people.

There are no STIs that I am aware of that cause dry, itchy nipples. It's likely this is just dry skin and you just need to lather lotion on often, especially after getting wet. And since you said you have been swimming and the dryness has gotten worse, this makes me believe that this is correct.

If lotion is not helping, see your doctor so they can provide you with something stronger.

Seriously would you go to the doctors if you were me? It would be so embarrassing trying to explain to the doctor what was wrong and you just know they would want to take a look at things

Well, that shouldn't stop you. It can be a bit awkward, but they've seen breasts, vaginas, and penises before.

I've had to go for bad odor from my vagina It was embarrassing, but the doctor didn't seem awkward. We just talked. And then he told me it was an infection and I got meds. Simple and it was over in a couple minutes.

Explaining it? Not much to explain. "I need to make an appointment because my nipples are dry and itchy, have have been for a while now."

It really doesn't matter to them. They've probably seen worse! So, don't be embarrassed. It happens and it's something bothering you.
