My dad using painkillers. - April 10th 2009, 10:31 AM

So I'm not sure if this belongs here.. but anyways..
My dad always buys these painkillers.. I don't know the name, but you can buy them at the dollar store here. He always says his back is hurting and believes painkillers are always going to work. My mom and everyone else in the family know he just pulled a muscle.. He did go to the doctor..
By working, I mean getting rid of the pain. So, any suggestions?

I'm not sure I completely understand?

You think your father is abusing these painkillers?

I mean, if he has pulled a muscle in his back... That would be rather painful and frankly I don't blame him for taking a few extra tablets to kick the pain. Especially if the doctor didn't prescribe anything.

The man has a sore back, so what's wrong with relieving the pain?

If you can get said medication at the Dollar Store, it really sounds like an over-the-counter treatment - e.g. Advil or Tylenol. These hold no risk of dependency to the user. These are not called pain killers, but rather, pain relievers. Pain killers are heavier, prescribed medication - and this is not to be confused with the former Advil/Tylenol.

In fact,

"In recent years, research has shown that doctors' fears that patients will become addicted to pain medication, known as "opiophobia," are largely unfounded. Studies indicate that most patients who receive opioids for pain, even those undergoing long-term therapy, do not become addicted to these drugs. The very few patients who develop rapid and marked tolerance and addiction to opioids are usually those who have a history of psychological problems or prior substance abuse."

If your dad is in pain and he is taking the recommended doses of these medicines then you have nothing to worry about. Over the counter pain relievers are not addictive or habit forming. Why is this bothering you? Does your dad have a history of substance abuse? If these posts haven't put your mind at ease then I would talk to a family member about your concerns. From what you've told us however it sounds like there is nothing to be worried about. If the OTC (over the counter) painkillers aren't helping your dad then he might need to see a doctor again about his pain. Starting physical therapy might help him and there are always options like using a heating pad or muscle relaxing ointment like tiger balm. Pulled muscles do hurt and taking something like tylenol or advil is reasonable while taking a prescription painkiller for it them might be a little more concerning depending on the severity of the muscle tear. Like I said talk to someone in your family if you're concerned. Take care and I hope your dad feels better soon.

Lots of love <3 Mimi
