My idiotic friend... - April 22nd 2009, 06:20 PM

One of my best friends has become addicted to cigarettes and she's only 13! I told her it was a bad idea to start smoking for the obvious reasons but (surprise, surprise) she has gone and got herself addicted. I can understand why she started because lots of her other friends smoke and she doesn't like being left out. She has also been a bit depressed and get pretty stressed, so I don't exactly blame her. I just don't know what I am going to do about her. I know loads of people who have respiratory problems because of smoking, and I don't want her to end up like that. I've told her to get nicotine patches or an inhaler, but she says it wouldn't be the same. I'm really worried about her because I don't want her to ruin her life. Please help.

I hate to make this suggestion, as I know she's close to you, but you may want to consider speaking to parents/guardians about her smoking and your concerns for her. When it's something like this, that... ultimately is illegal and could be detrimental to her health, it's something to consider. Or maybe you could visit the guidance counselor at your school and ask her/him about what to do (about an anonymous friend of course). You could also write/type an anonymous note for the guidance office about her smoking to possibly get her some help. It's obviously not a secret that she does it among her friends so chances are she may never find out it was you.

As young as she is, the choice to soke was hers and not yours. You can look out for her still, and tell her all the pitfalls of smoking, but in the end it is still her decision. Doing anything like, taking away her sokes, would just anger her and you could possibly lose her as a friend... over smoking, and then she would be right back at it. If it really makes you uncomfortable that she does smoke, then you don't HAVE to hang out with her. You could tell her that it really bothers you, and that your not going to be around her when she smokes and she isn't going to be smoking around you either. That is a choice you CAN make, and hopefully she will see her friend is more important than a cancer stick.

Take care,
Shaun.
