Smoking plastic...? - April 26th 2009, 10:33 PM

This may sound very weird, but let me explain.

I was at my friend's house last night, and there were four of us. My friend had fashioned a bong out of something used to fix sinks or sink pipes, I don't know, but it was plastic, and he'd worked hard on it, and we kept getting really good hits from it, but at one point, the plastic started burning. Not like on fire, but it was burning for sure. My friend took a pretty big toke, and went, "Woah, that was mostly plastic," because she could taste it, she said. We were high as f**k already, so we just moved the weed around in it so we didn't think that it would burn anymore, but I remembered that plastic is supposed to be pretty toxic when you burn it. I had a pretty weird trip, but we knew that it had been laced, so that wasn't surprising.

What's the worst that could have come from this if we were inhaling some of the plastic smoke?

Well if you did not have any adverse affects immediately you are probably okay, if it is just a one time exposure. You cannot keep smoking that piece though, melted plastic is horribly toxic, and with either 1 excessive exposure, or numerous lesser exposures, it is going to seriously place your health in jeaporady.

Smoking out of something plastic is dangerous and harmful. Many plastics release dioxins and other harmful fumes when burned.

From how you described it the smoking device sounds like it was made out of PVC pipe.

Quote:
The most dangerous emissions can be caused by burning plastics containing organoch-
lor-based substances like PVC
Quote:
Plastic such as PVC (polyvinylchloride)is common in such things as vinyl siding, bottles and jugs, vinyl tubing, drainpipes, blister paks, etc. Care should be taken never to burn these at home, as carbon monoxide, dioxins and furans are released into the air. Studies have linked dioxins and furans to cancer and respiratory disease.
I would let your friend know how dangerous this is and stop immediately. Even if you don't think you are burning much plastic while smoking this isn't something you want to guess about. Play it safe and throw the 'bong' away so you are never tempted to put your health at risk by using it in the future. Take care and be safe.

Don't do that anymore. If you don't have anything else to smoke out of get a glass bong whenever you have the money. It doesn't have to be anything extravagant or you can get a baby plastic bong. Plastic pieces are not meant to be smoked out of constantly. They should be used as more of a back up for whenever you don't have anything else to smoke out of. Roll a J or use a Blunt or a bowl..anything but constantly using plastic. That's really bad for you.

You are set. I've smoked plastic before by accident and there are no side affects. The only thing i'd be worried about would be long term effects from smoking plastic frequently. If it was a one-time thing, don't worry about it.
