All I want to do is drink and smoke weed, how can I fix this? - April 1st 2014, 04:37 AM

8 months ago I started losing a lot of motivation for school despite the fact that I now go to a prestigious arts academy boarding school. I don't want to do work, I have no motivation. Also, one of my best friends committed suicide 6 months ago.
Even though I have only been high once and only been tipsy before, I feel like all I want is alcohol to drink with my friends at boarding school and weed to get high so I don't have to worry about anything. This change started to occur in me in December and now it is like it is taking control of me. It is stealing away any possible motivation I have.
It isn't like this is normal though because I have always been a great student, with a 4.6 GPA ending last year and many academic accomplishments.
I have lost a lot of passion for playing saxophone (what I study at boarding school) and have lost motivation. I just feel tired a lot and don't want to do anything. I feel like the desire to drink and smoke has taken over me and is bringing me into a black pit.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can go back to my normal self like I was last year? Thanks.

It sounds like the reason you want to drink and get high is because of stress due to your best friend committing suicide. I'm really sorry that happened and that you had to go through that. Remember though that getting intoxicated is not a good way to fix your problems because when you sober up, all of the negative aspects of your life will be there waiting for you.
The best thing to do is handle these problems head-on. This doesn't mean you have to think about things that stress you or your best friend often, but instead you need to find healthy ways to cope.
Have you tried seeking therapy? A professional can help you to find ways to cope, and they can be a good outlet for venting.
Additionally, there are good alternatives to clearing your head or getting emotions out that doesn't involve getting high. You can go for a long walk, express yourself through art which you are already doing, or watch your favorite movie.
Work for school can get pretty stressful, but remember that you are in a school doing what you love. Try your best to find enjoyment in learning, even if the assignments are difficult. You'll feel better in the end if you are productive rather than if you are getting high all the time.


And here you are living, despite it all.
