LOTS of caffeine - November 23rd 2014, 12:13 AM

So i have a ten page paper due Monday, and I've largely ignored it till now. I went to the cafe and got a large frappe with so much espresso that they had to split it into two large(!) drinks. Anywho, not planning on sleeping for the next couple days. But how much is too much? This project is huge, and frankly, if I get put in the hospital, I win, because I'll have an extension for my project (not aiming for that though). I'd really just rather not die. So how should I proceed with this? And I refuse to sleep.

Caffeine overdoses take a lot of caffeine, so what you had is probably not enough to put you in the hospital. It's argued around 10 grams is enough to overdose. The baristas wouldn't give you nearly that much. The half life of caffeine is about 5 to 6 hours, so that means after 5 hours half of the caffeine you had is no longer in effect. Not sure how late it is in your timezone, but it likely won't keep you up all night. If you need to be alert to do your project (which is what caffeine does rather than keep you awake), it's best to have a cup of coffee every hour or so.
I'm not sure what exactly you're asking, though.

Well, I watched the barista make it, and shes a friend of mine. 10 shots of espresso, to be exact... but I did drink 7 shots of straight espresso on graduation night and it kept me up for 2 days straight. My question was pretty much "how much can I have" until I exceed the limit.

Oh Goddammit... I went through 10 shots of espresso in four hours and I'm fallin asleep. Someone explain that instead...

Re: LOTS of caffeine - November 23rd 2014, 07:07 AM

Caffeine makes you more alert; it increases brain activity. This doesn't necessarily means it wakes you up. It's a "pick-me-up" because the alertness makes you feel more awake, but drinking caffeine to stay awake isn't the best idea.
The average amount of caffeine per day that adults have is 400mg. One shot of espresso has 64mg of caffeine on average. If we multiply that by the number of shots you had, which was 10, we get 640mg of caffeine. So you actually had only a bit above the average amount. I also want to note we consume lots of caffeine (it's the most popular drug after all) so the average is a bit high. But again, that's nowhere near enough to be the "limit" you're asking about.

It varies person to person. I drink a SHIT load of caffine. probably about 500mg on a day off as i drink nothing but coke and higher on work days as i have energy drinks in work. So what you need to stay up all night is going to be lower then what i need.
