Urges - February 13th 2015, 11:55 PM

I've been getting strong urges to drink alcohol. I'm an recovering alcoholic and haven't drunk in about a year and 3/5 months. I was put on detox twice for it but the urges to drink are getting so strong and i feel so impulsive at times I don't know how to manage it. I've been in hospital for nearly two years and I'm on home leave for two nights (i come home two nights ever two weeks) and its really hard not to sneak out to buy alcohol and get drunk.

Any advice?

Hey Jessie,

One thing that might help is to focus on how far you've come. You're a recovering alcoholic who has been free from alcohol for more than a year! Take those two days to test yourself. Give yourself motivation to not go get alcohol, and reward yourself for it after the two days, be it trying something new or seeing that movie you really wanted to watch. I understand that the temptation is difficult to resist, but if you can do it for a year, you can definitely keep going!

I think you should avoid your self from distraction, things that would trigger your addiction. Recovery is about progression so take it one day at a time. My father is also an alcoholic, living with him in Washington DC is a chaos. All this wouldn't happen if his co-workers didn't influence him. But the good thing is he finally hit the bottom and said he will going to quit. My mom ask me to help her in finding an addiction treatment centers that can guide my dad in recovery. I really don't know anything about these centers. Are these really effective? There's just too many of them on the Internet. I'll take more time to review them or perhaps do you know some good rehab out there?
