AA meetings - October 4th 2015, 08:58 AM

So I recently moved to University, and it's not far from home so I'm still attending AA meetings in my home town every other week but I wanted to start going to ones on the weeks off in my new city. Thing is I tried to go to one and it wasn't as friendly or as good as the one I normally go too so I've been put off. But there are different ones so I'm wondering whether to try another one but I'm so anxious about it.

I just feel I need support with it at the moment, because it is hard since Im around people drinking and going to pubs and I don't want to fall back into drinking from half 7 in the morning to late everyday. I went on detox twice and have worked really hard but it feels so easy to slip back into it, you know?

I don't know what I'm looking for here, just some advice maybe. But thank you if you reply.

Hello Jessie,

It's so glad that you want to reach out to another AA group that is near your University. Not every group out there is the right fit for us, but there is still groups out there that are a lot better than the bad experience you did have.

Have you thought about calling the AA meeting places to see how they go about the meetings? You can explain you go to another in a different town and you go to school here and need support, that you need a AA meeting that has a kind, friendly space for you. It's worth a try. I am not sure if going to other types of groups may or may not benefit you, have you thought about other meetings or groups for things you are struggling with, or groups that are fun and relaxing? It may help you.

While at the AA meetings have you ever told everyone how you felt about why you feel they are not friendly?

What would a good AA meeting look like for you? What kinds of things you like to have in AA meeting that you didn't/don't have at the one near your University? Sometimes realizing what is different can help us to understand why we like the AA meeting the most, it separates it from other groups we go to.

I hope this is helpful and let us know how you are doing. Okay?
