Quick general drug question. - May 14th 2009, 10:32 AM

I've just been given a perscription for something and the instructions are "5 times a day at 4 hourly intervals for 7 days." This has slightly confused me- does it mean take one, then wait 4 hours before the next one, or wait one hours between each of the 5?

Any help appreciated.

Take one tablet, wait four hours then take another.
You should end up taking upto 5 tablets during the day.

Though in practice, you would not be able to stick to this unless you stayed up all night, so I would suggest having one as soon as you wake up, one when you go to bed, then spreading the other three evenly across your day based on what your normal sleep-wake cycle is.

It doesn't really matter if you don't take all 5, or if you take them once every 3.5 hours.

It works out that you could take them at

07:00
11:00
15:00
19:00
23:00

To make it work.

I disagree. You should ALWAYS finish a course of medication. If you don't then the illness can come back, and it will often have adapted to show increased resistance to the medication. If this is a contagious illness then anyone you infect with the resistant strain will also be less treatable with the same medication, and this is why some medications can be rendered useless. Misuse of antibiotics was, for example, responsible for the creation of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other 'super bugs'.

so long as you evenly spread them through the day and finish the course you won't have any problems. if its 3 hours or 5 hours instead of 4, it's not gunna make much of a difference.

To add, if you forget one, take it as soon as you remember, but don't wait 4 hours from then, take the next one as you normally would have.

And yea, I agree with Rob, if you decide your better and stop taking the meds, the bacteria/infection or whatever it is, rebuilds it self and becomes resistant to that type of medication, making it come back worse resulting in you having to take stronger meds for it.

If you think you're gonna be asleep for it, put on an alarm, take the pill, and go abck to sleep.
Also, check if you should be eating with these as some meds can damage the lining of the stomach.

If you have a hard time fitting all five pills into your day then you could always talk to your doctor or pharmacist about a possible solution to the problem. It might be okay to take them at a different time interval or increase the dose at each interval but that would be something for your doctor to approve. If you have a hard time remembering when to take your meds you can always set a specific schedule and have your cell phone alarm go off at the times of the day you'll need to take a pill. Earlier this year I was on a crazy medicine that I had to take 4 times a day but 1 hour before eating and afterwards I couldn't take my next dose within 2 hours of my last meal. It was kinda confusing but after I worked out a schedule and stuck to it everything worked out. I hope you feel better soon and don't have to deal with this headache anymore.

Lots of love <3 Mimi

Re: Quick general drug question. - May 14th 2009, 06:01 PM

Thanks for the answers folks. I too was confused about the pill pattern, as I'd have to take one at 4am (although those of you who know me wouldn't be surprised to see me pull that off!) so I rang the pharmacy and they said it's also acceptable to get 5 in 24hrs, even if there is a slight bigger gap.

Thanks again.
