Exclamation Caught? - July 28th 2016, 11:10 AM

So a while back my friend asked me to look after 4 of his lighters while he got searched. Being a good student who has never even had a detention i thought they would never think of me to have them so i put them in my blazer pocket.

Fast forward to today, i still had his lighters and i completely forgot about them. My mum came into my room, held them up and asked me why i had them. I told her the truth and i said i kept them for a friend and forgot to give them back. She yelled at me and said that it could get me in a lot of trouble and walked out. The problem is, i don't think she believes me. Many of my friends smoke so it's hard to believe i don't. I just don't want her thinking i smoke when i don't.

Any comments or suggestions?

Hello Chloe,

Has your mom ever smelled nicotine or cigarette smell on your clothing when she washes them? If she has never smelled anything out of the ordinary then she can confirm that you don't smoke. Usually nicotine sticks to the clothing and onto your skin, your breath also becomes different. These are all things you could bring up with her to have her think about it. When you do talk to her ensure she is in a good mood, talking to her when she is upset it can be harder to talk to her and explain what is going on.

You can also mention that you understand your friends smoke but you don't. You can explain why you don't join them in smoking, this might be helpful so your mom has a better way of understanding where you are coming from.

Do you think the way your mom reacted to the lighters makes sense? My perspective is that she really cares about you and doesn't want you to get into trouble. I do see on your perspective that you wanted to help a friend out because they wouldn't search you.

I know it seems harmless to carry a lighter and given that you are 14 you're more likely to get in trouble if they found it on you because the legal age to smoke cigarettes is 18 years of age in England.

Are you able to talk to your mom about this? If you need any help on doing this feel free to message back.
If you talked to your mom, how did the conversation go?

I hope this was helpful and if you have any questions feel free to let me know.

Take care.
