chance to smoke.. - July 27th 2009, 05:17 AM

Hello wonderful people.

I've already posted a few threads about a sort of reliance I have on alchohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. Basically I used to do all of the listed because I had a self-harm addiction that I had to kick, and those substances would either calm me down or give me the same feeling as cutting. My recent lack of usage has mostly been due to lack of resources, but I feel like I've gone through most of the mental withdrawel already and kind of like I'm getting back on track.

Anyway, my friend invited me to hang out with her and some other friends tomorrow, and she mentioned that she might be getting some pot. I'm thinking that it's okay, because this is just going with some friends and having a little fun, not using it to escape or suppress anything. But that's what I always hear from people who relapse, that they think they can go and drink or whatever just at a party and not go back, but then they do. should I really be afraid of falling back into things if I do this?

Hey Shannon,

I can see where you're thinking you'll be okay to hang out with your friends. Often when we're feeling better we can't ever think we'd ever go back to the same old substances. Though, be aware it does happen. I'm not going to advise you not to go tomorrow, but I can't tell you not to worry about relapsing. Often, it can happen when we least expect it and when we're feeling our best. My suggestion is to be aware. Don't forget the goals you're trying to reach and keep them in the front of your mind the whole time. If I were you, I would make it a challenge to not smoke pot with your friends. It's true, the reasons we do things often make an addiction that much more evident to occur, but everyone is different. You might not have been physically addicted before - which would make continuing the substances easier (when it's just for fun). But if you were, then having pot tomorrow might bring it back. You never know.

My suggestion to you is to wait. If you're so uncertain about this, then it's probably best to completely avoid the situation all together. If you feel you can't not smoke pot with your friends, then it might be best not to go. However, saying no can help the process to healing the past addictions. I don't want you to rule anything out, but I don't want you to be scared. Know you're strength and when you're in over your head. It's okay to be uncertain and steer clear of things for a while. Do what you're most comfortable with.

I was looking for why people relapse and other things about that general topic and found this to be interesting. Maybe you should give it a read. Remember you can do this and we're all behind you. Take care of yourself and PM me if you need anything at all.

Have hope,

Don't you worry your pretty little mind, people throw rocks at things that shine..

I think you should wait a little longer before you go and do that at least, otherwise its highly likely you will get addicted to it again.

It is your decision you shouldn't listen to other people as what to do about it.
