Lightbulb Out of curiosity... - February 8th 2009, 03:31 AM

What do you consider the most dangerous type of drug?

Over the counter or Street drugs. Why?

I guess I'm asking because over the counter drug abuse has grown very quickly. There was a news special on over the counter. The anchor said parents shouldn't worry about street drugs anymore, they should watch their kitchens, bathrooms, medicine cabinets and drug stores. Are tripple C's the new cocaine?
Are they as bad or worse?

Street drugs. They can kill instantly.

OTC drugs must meet stringent safety considerations for use and are exceptionally pure

Street drugs aren't regulated, are laced, etc. Far more dangerous than regulated OTC medications.

They're both majorly dangerous but I think street drugs are the most dangerous for reasons stated above.

I agree with the reasons above,
and also with some over the counter drugs (i've had this problem before) you need all kinds of ID and permission and whatever, I think it's easier to regulate over the counter drugs which is -for me personally- the reason street drugs are so dangerous.

there's actually not much of a difference anymore.

The main danger from over the counter drugs comes from the idea of safety. "These drugs have to meet regulations, so they can't be that bad!" Also, none of the "herbal supplements" and many non-prescribed drugs do not have to meet FDA approval before going on sale, and may have TERRIBLE interactions with other meds you take.

Nowadays, OTC drugs can be found on the street if you know the right people. Especially prescription ones.

However, I think street drugs are far more dangerous than anything that is legally sold.
Production companies have to take into consideration that their drug may be abused.

But, even the simplest drug can be dangerous if used in the wrong way.

Yeah I've heard about that. You can also find them online which is awful.
Like most people have said, who knows what they could be laced with?

Thanks for the replies so far!

I'd say street drugs as you don't always know what ingredients they contain so although you might think you know what you're taking you could actually be taking a concoction of all sorts.

Not to mention most diet pills are basically speed, which were only ever supposed to be used for morbidly obese people.

There are so many cases of addiction and deaths from diet pills.
The ones online are even worse with other crap shoved into them.

Street drugs are more dangerous because you've got no idea whats actually in it. although, OTC drugs, when abused can be very dangerous also. drug abuse of any kind is not gunna be good for you.

and just adding to what Jade said about diet pills, i read this article in the paper the other day about a woman going psychotic on diet pills she got off the internet and killing herself, scary stuff.

Honestly, to me it depends on what you define as 'street. I can get any form of drugs, prescription, laced, coke, etc-on the streets where I live, if you know the right people. OTC aren't as dangerous imo because well, if you buy it from the store, chances are your pills won't be laced.Get it on the streets, and the pills are either laced or lacing something else.

Energy shots and energy pills are as bad as diet pills. Very addictive and dangerous. One of my coworkers is very insane on energy shots.

Street drugs have the element of surprise with not knowing entirely what may be in them. However, OTC drugs can be just as lethal. Take too much of anything and it can be a poison, OTC drugs are no exception. The OTC drugs are certified by the FDA and such but if you're given a prescription for, say, 7 days and you get the idea to gulp them all down at once, you've reached something just as or more lethal than street drugs. However, despite being just as or more lethal, you do have the benefit of knowing what's in them.

Comparing triple c's to cocaine isn't the correct analogy. It is not the new cocaine by any means. It's been around for a while and abusing cough medicine isn't anything new. Asking if street drugs are more harmful than over the counter and prescriptive drugs is like asking if cigarettes are more harmful than cigars. They're both equally dangerous, but prescriptive drug abuse in our generation is the big drug craze and epidemic.

I'm split on which I think is dangerous. OTC drugs are in easy reach of anyone to take as many as they want which could result in overdose but as said, they have to be safe for public sale which means you'd need a high amount. Then you have drugs that aren't as in easy reach but can be an instant killer without taking too much.
