Can't stop smoking :-( - May 5th 2010, 06:34 AM

So, I've been smoking since I'm 12 and now I'm 19 and lately I've been smoking almost up to 3 packs a cigarettes a day or sometimes even more. As soon as one cigarette is gone I light another one, I'm truly addicted.
And I really want to stop, because I don't have a fantastic health and I shouldn't be smoking and sometimes I only make myself sick because of it. I just don't know how to do it, can someone help me?

My best advice would be to ask your doctor, they usually have a lot of helpful information about where to get support, health risks, and more.

I also recommend getting some of those nicotine patches, which will help you stop smoking a little at a time. Also, find something to keep your hands and your thoughs busy. If you're preoccupied with something, you wont have as much time to think about lighting up. My friend chewed a stick of gum everytime he wanted a cigarette, it kept him busy and was cheaper than tobacco.

Talk to other people - tell them you want to quit. Then, when you want to smoke, they can call you out on it and help you find something else to do. It's not going to happen overnight, but you can do this if you remind yourself of the health benefits and keep a positive attitude!

If you're up to 3+ packs a day, you will need a lot of help to quit. My second cousin was up to three packs a day at one point and when he tried to quit cold turkey he had a heart attack. Of course, at the time he was much older than you are now (about 40 or so) and he also had other heart problems so I don't necessarily think a heart attack should be on your list of worries. However, if you quit cold turkey the withdrawal will be absolutely brutal and you're much more likely to regress back into it than if you try to wean yourself gradually.

As others have recommended, I think you should talk to your doctor. He or she will have much useful information to provide on medical methods of quitting (such as nicotine patches, etc.). If you google it you can also find many ways to occupy yourself during the quitting process so that you are less tempted to pick up a cigarette.

Another (rather unconventional) method of quitting I have heard of is to switch over to pipe smoking. I don't necessarily condone this method but I have heard that switching over to a pipe has worked for people. Although there is no "healthy" way to smoke, pipe smoking by contrast is much less unhealthy than cigarettes - both because you typically don't breathe in and because good pipe tobacco is all natural with none of the demonic additives that cigarettes have. Like I said, this method is unconventional and for many it is impractical, but I just thought I'd throw it out there for your consideration. Personally, I think it would be better if you talked to your doctor about it.

Hope I helped. Good luck!
