How long will it take my lungs to get back to normal? - December 20th 2010, 02:41 PM

I started smoking when I was 15, I smoked on average 4-5 cigarettes a day until I was 17, then smoked on average 15 a day until I was 19. I quit 122 days ago to be exact I'm just wondering how long will it take until my lungs go back to normal (like a person who has never smoked)?

Also, will the chances of me having lung cancer or whatever still be high because I used to smoke?

Quote:
Here are some statistics that will help you to see the benefits of quitting smoking. After quitting smoking:
In 2-3 months your circulation will improve, walking will be easier, and lung function will increase by up to 30%
In 1-9 months your lung cilia (little hair-like projections that catch junk in your lungs) will return to normal. Smoking paralyzes these projections, so you can't cough stuff out. Coughing, fatigue and shortness of breath should decrease
In 1 year the risk of coronary heart disease drops to half of that of a contining smoker.
In 5 years the risk of stroke is the same as someone who has never smoked.
In 10 years lung cancer death rates drop to half of that of a continuing smoker, and cancers of the throat, mouth, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decrease.
After 15 years the risk of heart disease is about the same as someone who never smoked.
I found this here.

I hope it helps. Well done for quitting !

Wow, 15 years for everything to get to normal is longer than I thought I've noticed it's easier to walk around already though so I guess that's good.

I don't know. My grandmother used to smoke and quit when my oldest cousin was born which is 25 years ago and her lungs are still messed up she says doesn't feel like her lungs have gotten any better she only has half a lung left.
But everyone is different and you are young I would start off by "testing" how good your lungs are try going for a run to see how far you can go and slowly try going more and more each time.
Good Luck.

It takes about fifteen to twenty years. I am not sure about the cancer risk but I would think they would decrease.
