smoking at 12 - February 10th 2011, 01:05 PM

My son has recently started smoking at 12
I think he does it to fit in with his friend and be 'cool'
He has been living in Portugal until last year when we returned to England
He has had some bullying problems at his school when he joined the last year which have improved
Can anyone give me some advice on how to help him and encourage him to give up
He knows the bad effects of smoking and Ive tried the 'scare factor' by showing him grotesques images of related diseases like cancer etc.

I started smoking at 12 recently gave up for 2 years and have started again but will try quitting again
More than anything I want to give up

I dont want him to start for his own good and I think he has a chance since he is not yet totally addicted

Why not try giving up with your son? It'll give you an incentive to not smoke and hopefully help your child in the same way, and it's a lot harder to get someone to stop doing something when you do it yourself so it'll help in this manner as well.

Aside from the fact that you want to stop smoking, could you perhaps stop giving him money so he can't buy any? Or tell the school and see if they can offer your child any help to stop smoking?
Don't be really hard on him though, if you are it can end up having a negative effect and just making him more likely to smoke.

She fed him with a hunger, an appetite
And fillin' with emotion he took a bite'
