Addicted to cough pills

I'm addicted to taking cough pills. I take anywhere from 3-7 a day. Sometimes more depending on my mood. I want to stop, but I don't know how. Advice?

Yeah. If you take more than the recommended amount you get a high from it.

[Edited] Why u even start such an addiction? Go outside, play sports, go for a run/etc why eat cough pills?

Over the counter addictions are not fun at all, and I can relate to that in a way. I think the best thing to do is talk to a doctor. They'd be able to work with you to get off of them, if you need the help. Or at least someone you trust that's an adult. One of the first few steps is to tell someone about it.

yeah this is not a fun addiction at all especially since its over the counter it is easy to get...I was addicted to benadryal and I simply cut that out by not buying it at all its hard and you have urges but it gets better find a hobby

I believe that any addiction can be overcome. First you need to resist and eliminate the presence of what it is that you are addicted to, because continued usage like this can cause long-term damage. Then you need to develop coping strategies or ways that you can stop thinking about this so eventually it can be forgotten altogether. It would definitely be a good idea to talk to your parents about this, so they can help you with this.

These days, many stores are checking identifications of people trying to buy these items. It is situations like this which prompted many cities and states to outlaw the sale of many over-the-counter medicines to those under the age of 18. At least you are in the frame of mind where you are wanting to pull yourself out of this. You can, and you will succeed.

Oddly enough, I was addicted to Halls coughdrops... doesn't seem like a lot, but I couldn't stop, even when I didn't have a cough. What I did to quit was slowly cut back on the amount I consumed each day. You said you take around 7, my suggestion is try just 5 or even 6 for a week or two, less or more time if you feel you need it. Then take 5 for about a week, then 4, then 3. Take as much time as you need and slowly cut back. Although like suggested above, it'd probably be a good idea to see a doctor.

TotallyWorthless: More common than you would think. It's the high sugar content. There isn't really much real medication in them. My dad's boss was legitimately addicted to halls, he took the same method as you did, just gradually cutting back.
