Don't know what to do anymore - August 12th 2012, 12:23 AM

My mother is an alocholic and she's been that way ever sense I can remember. I'm so tried of it and I don't know what to do...She makes me so angry sometimes because she says she'll stop and she won't. She says she's stressed and that's why she drinks. But can't she use other methods. And my dad's agaisnt her even though he is a recovering alocholic. I'm so confused. And I just don't know what to do anymore.

As a person with a recovering alcoholic mother i completely understand where you are coming from. I'm going to be honest with you, unless you make her stop she will never stop no matter how many times she says she will. My mother did it because of stress too but it never helped her, it only dragged her down further and almost cost her everything, including her job, our house, and even my brother and I, not to mention almost going to jail for child abuse. I know its hard to say "Mom, you have to stop drinking." especially when you know she will be angry and argue but you have to try because she is your mom and no matter how many times she makes you mad you still love her. i wish you the best of luck!

Thanks, as soon I muster up some courage...I'll try to tell her that.

Are your parents still in a relationship and living together? If so, your father could become your ally, and together, the two of you could deliver an ultimatum: get help, or there will be consequences. I know that's a difficult thing to do, but oftentimes, interventions are needed in order to motivate a loved one to get help for their addiction. Since your father is a recovering alcoholic, he should be able to tell your mom about the various forms of treatment: 12-step meetings at AA is a popular one, and there are literally meetings every day of the week in major cities. A more extreme form of treatment would be to enter a rehab program. Therapy could also be effective in addition to attending 12-step meetings, and you could look into individual, couples, or family therapy (after all, your mother's addiction isn't just affecting her - it's also affecting you and your father!).
