Why is it so difficult? - February 26th 2019, 09:57 PM

Iíve always found it difficult to make friends with people my own age. In all honestly, I donít like many people of my age (19). I get on brilliantly with people who are younger than me and love spending time with them... a lot more than I like being with fellow 18-20 year olds. I suppose it doesnít help that I donít really drink/go clubbing etc and prefer video games, music etc. The older I get, the most worried I get though, as Iím concerned I would come across as strange wanting to be friends with younger people, also itís harder to meet people of that age group as Iím coming to the end of youth groups etc. I really donít know what to do. I have tried to make friends with people my age but Iím always bored in their company and donít enjoy it at all. I am self diagnosed with ADHD (waiting for a proper diagnosis) and think this is partly the issue. I also work in quite a strict job so outside of work love being more Ďimmatureí and crazy. Iím moving on in some areas of my life, while my younger friends arenít so much, but am still able to be myself around them... something I can never do with people my age or older people

Firstly, there's nothing wrong with not getting along with others your age and finding that you relate more to younger people. There isn't anything wrong with not drinking, going to clubs etc. If you do have ADHD then it does explain why you feel this way, and if this is the case, then you may have the option of going to support groups or other groups where you can meet others with ADHD and see if you can relate to them.

It's very understandable that if you have to work in a 'strict' job that you feel the need to let off steam and be yourself in your free time. You mention that you enjoy video games and music and I'm wondering if there are any social groups or events around you that you could join? Or even online spaces, like TeenHelp, where you can chat and make friends with others with similar interests? When it comes to sharing interests, age isn't a barrier so this may help you to make friends, regardless of age.

It may help to keep your options open when it comes to making friends the same age or older than you as they may be able to meet your needs that younger people may not be able to. But that said, there's nothing wrong with being friends with people younger than you. You're not doing anything illegal and while some people may find it 'strange' it really isn't any of their concern.
