Unhappy Friend has cancer. - July 3rd 2009, 10:49 AM

My friend Jade has cancer. She was diagnosed about umm, 5/6 weeks ago. It's lymphoma cancer. My mum told me it's very rare that people pull through it, but she seems to be doing okay. She's in and out of hospital and looks very well actually, I'm just so worried because she's saying she's starting to feel really sick now, she's so young and all my friends are also worried about her.

I've never really had to cope with an ill friend, I'm talking to her a lot tho, mainly via text or facebook, and my friends and I were planning on taking a picnic to her at hospital next week to cheer her up. I just cant believe it, it seemed so weird at first but now she's starting to get really ill it's hitting home that she's not well at all. She still looks like the same old Jade, she has a wig now though. She's got 4 months left of chemo and then she should be better, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for her as she's been my friend for a while now

Hiya Emma. It must be a really difficult time for you and your friends right now, as well as Jade and her family; but just try to remain strong no matter how much you are worried because Jade needs you to be strong for her otherwise she may not feel like being strong either.

I am sure there are support groups out there that may be really beneficial to you and your friends, so if you along to some maybe they can provide you with comfort and answers to your queries so as to ease the worry.

Be positive about this, Jade WILL pull through!

take care x

Hi Emma,

I must say that Jade is one lucky person right now to have such supportive friends. I understand how difficult it must be for all of you, but you are all sticking together and trying to see the bright side. That is the best way to deal with being ill or having a friend that is ill. Really, there is a lot you can cure with a smile

The picnic is a wonderful idea, and I'm sure she will be delighted to have all of you there for her. Texting and facebook are good ways to stay in touch, but seeing her in person and spending time with her in person are best.

I know this is tough, but keep staying strong and being there for your friend. She sounds like a strong person, and that is really going to help her pull through.

If you ever need to talk, feel free to PM me sometime.

Take care. And I hope your picnic goes well

Nat.

Hey,

I think it is great that you are being so supportive and Jade sure has some great friends. I think that is what she needs the most right now; a great support network.

The picnic sounds like a wonderful idea and maybe you could do a little something special(on your own) to show her how much she means to you like getting her a card or a small gift or something. You don't have to of course but it might make you feel better and it never hurts to go the extra mile to let someone know how very appreciated they are.

Hang in there and I hope things turn out okay.

If you ever need somone to talk to my pm box is always open.

Sorry to bump!

Jade has been told her cancer is clearing up nicely and she should be in remison by October. She's putting weight back on already, so glad she's okay because I knew she'd be able to fight it :]

Re: Friend has cancer. - July 19th 2009, 02:54 AM

that's great news. :] actually i'm pretty sure lymphoma has one of the highest cure rates of all childhood cancers.. not that it's any consollation for how you as her friends and she must be feeling at the moment.. but at least things are positive.

i seem to go on about it quite a lot of here these days, so you might already know.. but i've been fighting cancer for just over 8 months now.

i remember when i was diagnosed how important my friends were to me [and have been every day since.] it's weird how the smallest thing like a text message would lighten up my whole day.

my best advice is.. try not to treat her any differently. involve her in anything you organise.. even if you don't think she'll be able to come, make sure you include her. having your friends behind you can change your whole outlook so just do your best to be by her side whenever she needs you.

sometimes she might just want you to be there.. and you don't even have to do or say anything, in fact sometimes you probably won't know what to say. my best friend gets a load of abuse from me on a regular about how much i hate certain doctors/nurses/test.. blah blah

also something i find really helpful is that my friends sometimes tell other people about my cancer before people ask me. because.. naturally i don't want to have to explain my medical history to every person i meet. some people are really private about their diagnosis and treatment.. and some people don't care who knows, and actually like talking about it.

there was a quote on a card that one of my good friends gave me when i was diagnosed.. [which ironically coincided with my 16th birthday!] and it read, "with friends by your side, no road seems to long." and its a quote i think about pretty much daily. however long the road gets and however much you just can't see that light at the end of the tunnel.. it'll be there.

i better shut up now before i turn this post into a ramble about myself. but anyhow.. i really hope your friend continues to fight through and that the rest of her treatment goes well :]

..and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears..
