This girl might need help - August 21st 2009, 01:41 PM

So, in Science yesterday, I was just sitting there and waiting for class to start (our teacher has meetings on Thursdays, so she's always running late.) Then this girl quite literally runs into the room and takes a seat behind me. She asked me if she had cheese on her face from lunch, and I told her she didn't. She then asked if I knew her, and I said I might have went to Elementary with her, because I recocgnized her face. Then she asked me if I liked any guys, told me about this one guy she liked, and showed me a blister on her hand. Then she showed me a cut on her wrist, claiming that it was intentionally made. This is where I started to get concerned. Throughout the rest of class, nearly all she did was talk about all of the times she's gotten hurt, and all of the things that are wrong with her body. But she wasn't talking about them like she was upset; she was talking about them like they were cool. I could see that some of them were true (like the cutting, and some bruises on her arm.) I think she wants to be friends, but this is too tricky of a situation, I don't want to get involved unless it's to help her. I can't tell if she really needs help, or if she's just one of those people who constantly crave attention and sympathy. I used to kind of be like that in the third grade, and I used to have a friend with an emotional disorder who would cut herself whenever someone decided not to be her friend. I REALLY don't want to have another situation like that.

thats a really tricky situation.. from what youve said.. it seems to me like shes just seeking attention.. although i could be wrong.
but thats what it seems like to me..
in my opinion, if she really had a problem she wouldnt be boasting about the cuts and bruises on her arms and stuff.
but thats just what i think
she might just be looking for a friend.. and if you dont want to be her friend then just try to put up with her for that one class.. be nice to her and stuff though, obviously. and if you see that she really does need help, then try to help her out
hmm.. i hope this helped :S sorry if it didnt hah

If somebody is doing stuff like that to get attention, then they definitely need help. It's not complicated in any way. She might have an emotional disorder, and she might have bad depression. Does that really matter when she need help? Somebody who constantly craves attention needs help whether you think so or not. Please do what's in your power to find out what she needs help with, and try to point her in the right direction.

i think that if someone is telling you about this, then they do need help. it's probably just a weird way of having a cry for help. but i can see where you'd think she only wanted attention. but really, if people are going to get attention by showing people they hurt themself, they do need help. whether you can see it or not.

talk to your school councler. she probably just wants attention, but maybe she could use a friend right now! talk to her, maybe hang out, and if she continues to be as alarming as she is then talk to an adult. good luck =]

Thanks, everyone. I do plan to talk to the school counselor soon. The girl seems a little better than she was when I first met her, though. She's a lot more calm now, but she still occasionally points out those things or talks about them. She left choir today to go to the counselor, so hopefully she's talking to someone, but I still want to help. Anyway, thanks, guys.
