My Family Treats Me... - January 28th 2009, 10:45 PM

Like crap.

My mom and grandmother are emotionally, and verbally abusive. They both keep trying to control me. I feel like I'm obligated to maintain contact with them and to be nice and to continue living with my mother until I get out of college. However, I'm tired of all of the abuse and all of the bull crap I put up with. I feel like I'm a bad daughter and granddaughter if I don't continue living with my mother and taking their abuse. I do want out of there, however, because I can't take it much longer. I don't have the finances to get out of there. My boyfriend (of six months)'s grandmother has offered to let me live with her (she lives all alone in a two story house with three bedrooms) and my boyfriend has offered to give me an "allowance" of a certain amount every month so that I have something to live on.

I feel like I'm speaking in circles, but I can't think straight in this situation. How do I deal with this? What do I do?

I am so sorry you have to go through this. Can you talk to your mom or grandmother about the way they make you feel? Explain to them that they're hurting you. Maybe try to get a part time job while in school and work full time over summer so you can start saving up to move out. I don't know if I woujld live with your boyfriends grandmother. If something were to happen between you two, it could make for an awkward situation. Do you have any other family members you can talk to or get help from?

I don't have any other family members to go to for help. Also, I can't get a part time job because I'm pulling 19 hours this semester. I plan on getting a full time job when I'm out for the summer. I'm unsure about moving in with his grandmother even though I'm certain of our relationship together. I'm also really unsure about taking money from him. He does so much for me anyway. I'm also worried that my family's emotional abuse will turn into physical abuse.

If you feel like you are not safe there, you should consider the offer to live with his grandmother. You need to keep yourself safe, first and foremost.
