She's driving me insane - May 15th 2010, 12:37 AM

My mother never has anything good to say. Whether it's about me or my sister she never every says anything good about us. Now that I'm in a relationship she won't stop from telling me that it's going to turn out badly. My boyfriend isn't even allowed at our house anymore because she doesn't like him because of his skin color. She keeps saying I should be dating someone of my own nationality. I had talked to a few guys before dating my boyfriend who were the same nationality as me. I gave them a chance, but a few of them just wanted sex. One of them stopped talking to me when I canceled our date because I wasn't feeling well. I tried sitting down and talking to my mom calmly. It did not work at all. She started saying she gets an attitude because I irritate her because I'm around her. She continued to say she can never say anything good about me because there is nothing good about me. She also said the only thing she ever did "wrong" was give birth to me. I got so hurt I started crying and she told me to stop being a big baby. I got really angry...but there's nothing I can do. Talking to her clearly does not work. I want a way to cope with her constant negativity. I'm talking to my boyfriend online right now and I'm talking to him about everything. But, any advice on coping with someone who is negative all the time would be greatly appreciated!

Oh my God! =( April, I am so sorry to hear about what's going on with your mother. To say that she regrets giving birth to you... that's cold. No, that's beyond cold... it's downright inhuman.

I honestly don't know how anyone could cope with such extreme and constant negativity. Is there any possibility that you could move out? I know that this is a crappy economy, and you may be unemployed or a student at the moment... but perhaps you could live with another relative for a while? You could offer to pay a small amount of rent, or do chores around the house as payment.

Otherwise... avoid your mother like the Plague. Don't talk to her, whether it's to defend yourself or ask where the remote control is. Get a lock for your room, if she's the kind of person that would barge in and hurl insults at you. If she doesn't give a crap about you, then frankly, why should you bother acknowledging her presence?
