female/male best friends - February 22nd 2009, 06:13 AM

Do you think males and females can be bestfriends?
not in the i have alot of bestfriends way or the i met this guy 6 months ago and now were best friends way :P

So basically, do you think if you have known someone of the opposite sex for a long time you can be each others one and only best friend? or will it always stuff up/lead to something?
cheers :P

I think so...I actually wish I had a best guy friend (I don't really count my bf in that category but it is in a way my best friend). But several of my bf's best friends are girls. Even though he liked 1 of them before he liked me, I trust that he won't do anything with her, they're just really good friends...so basically yes, I do think it's possible.

Re: female/male best friends - February 22nd 2009, 09:35 AM

Yes, but... my best friend is a guy.
and we've been REALLY close for about four years now, we knew each other before but we weren't best friends.
The thing was I fell for him MAAAJJORRLLLYYY like I would start crying every time I saw him... in the end he ask me to tell him what was wrong and why I was avoiding him and I told him thinking that our friendship was now completely over, and he told me he wasn't into me but still wanted to be friends.
And we're still best friends.
I think guys/girls can have best friends of the opposite sex but there's always a risk that (if the circumstance allows it) one might fall for the other... but in my experience that hasn't been a problem, apart from to inflate his ego.

most of my best friends are guys. yea I have had feelings for them but I've never acted on it they usually go away.
Through everything 99% of the time its been my guys friends that I depend on in hard times, my girl friends tend not to be there for me after time one of my closest friend is a guy I've known for nearly 12 years, and all the girls except one that I've known for that long or longer just kind of faded away, and she didn't talk to me for a good 5 of those years anyway. so yea guys and girls can be best friends

I don't know if I even have a best friend anymore. But I have a lot of really good friends. And I do think girls and guys can be best friends. It wouldn't be a problem for me because I'm a lesbian. So there would be no attraction. But it can work.

Re: female/male best friends - February 22nd 2009, 03:28 PM

Personally, I don't like saying 'best friend'. I don't know why, but I just don't

But one of my closest, if not *the* closest friend I have is a guy. I've known him since I was 4 - we went to the same Infant School, we lost touch, then around five years ago we started talking again and we're really close. We have kissed, but it was in a 'friend kissing' situation, i.e. spin the bottle etc. I can't see anything happening between the two of us, and we have spoken about it too and so we're both on the same level. So therefore, yes, I do think it can work :]

Having said that though, I have had times when I've been really close friends with a guy who then told me he liked me and things just went straight down hill. As in, vertically down hill!

I agree with Ellie, I don't like saying that. I used to think ALOT that I had best friends when I was younger, but now it takes a long time for me to consider someone being my best friend. Even so, I never liked the idea of favoring one friend over others.

As for the OP's question, it hasn't happened to me yet, so I'd say no, it's not possible, definitely something would happen if the two were straight.

I think it's definitely possible. I've had a lot of really close guy friends that I had no romantic interest in. My "best" friend now is a guy, and he's gay, so there's no chance of a "more than friends" relationship.

I definitely think that males and females can be best friends. I am a girl and my best friend is a guy. He is gay, but he is still a guy. I have a lot of other guy friends. I tend to get along better with guys because they don't argue over silly things like girls have a tendency to do.

I just want to say...of course they can!!!
People can be friends with whoever they want, and it doesn't make a difference whether the person is male or female. I've got quite a mixed group of friends and I feel just as comfortable around the guys as the girls. It really makes no difference to me.

Haha, i'd dont like saying 'best friend' either.. Not really because of favoring one of the other, its just so packed full of cheese :P
its not really a problem for 'picking one over the other', because we don't have a group per se, we only really hang out with each other. and even as i say that.. is that odd? lool i mean when does a really close friendship with a person become a romantic relationship without.. well, sex. haha does that even make sense?
anyway.. weird ;\ its not like i'm constantly thinking these things, just someone said something the other day which psyched me out. haha.

My best friend is a guy, and we've been that way for over ten years. I've never fallen for him, and he's never fallen for me. We both have no interest in anything other than friendship. :]

Yes, I don't see anything wrong with it. Almost all of my friends are guys. There's waaaay less drama with them.

Yes, not every friendship turns into a relationship plus it sometimes happens with people that are best friends of the same gender...it doesn't matter who you are...
I had a guy best friend for a year and neither of us felt 'that way' towards each other...

Re: female/male best friends - February 23rd 2009, 03:36 PM

I think it can be done, yes...

I'm really close to my friend K. We spend quite a lot of time together, I would randomly go to the pub with him if we were both bored, or just out driving or whatever. We have kissed a few times over the years, always in random drunk situations. I really care about him but I am not attracted to him in the slightest and neither is he to me. We are good friends and it works, neither of us want anything more from each other and have joked about how we'd be the worst couple ever cos of how annoying we find each other!!

But yeah to answer the question, yes it is possible!
